Honestly I don't think he can go full R&B right now either, speaking solely from public perception going away from rap for a full album after Kdot make sure to paint him as a outsider "I like Drake with the melodies" "keep making me dance and waving my hand" would look kinda crazy for him
True.
If Drake changes genres, it would be an Eminem/MGK situation all over again where the narrative is that Eminem bullied him out of hip hop.
Drake still gotta put out some hard rap joints to go against that narrative while still having songs for the radio/clubs.
His next album needs to be concise though. None of that playlist BS like FATD.
Wish drake leaned and tapped into this type of vibe more than the trap sound/collabs all the fewtch 21 thug baby songs became overkill so fast imo
I really like “The Ride” and wish he got into that bag more often. Would like to hear more storytelling. “Too Much” and “The Ride” are two examples I can think of. Like outside of industry stuff and fast girls, that would be cool to hear him actually reflect on things a little bit. Doesn’t even have to be super deep.
I love the pseudo-mob raps, but yeah, would be cool to see him go back to rapping over soul samples and crooning over airy, ambient 40 beats. Would definitely win back some fans that were turned off by the pedophile allegations/narratives
Un 2016-2019 himself cut the hair and beard, let a little chub develop 🤣 go back to the bald fade and rap wise be the executive version of who he was on So Far Gone
TLDR.
The issue with Drake and it has been clear for probably the last 5 years now is he hasn't grown up yet.
It's not the place of fans or honestly anyone else to force an artist to grow up. Their lifestyles are totally different from an average person, which probably makes growing up harder. But as his fans have grown up, he hasn't.
There's just so many times you can talk about a girl not liking you, even though you bought her a rolex and condo (this is so corny). That is so surface level. There's just so many times you can talk about some girl not liking you or ruining a relationship etc (why does he never talk about why it may be his fault). He can still make music about these topics, but he needs to go deeper as to why these relationships aren't working. That would require him to do a lot of soul searching/being honest.
He doesn't need to go full on concept album like Kendrick does, but he can always delve way deeper into his life/mind.
He has instances where he does this (Is there more), but he never really does it. He just talks about his feelings at such a surface level. It may have been "deep" when his fans were teens/college students, but now it falls flat.
Even though I think people over exaggerate how "deep" Kendrick is, Mr. Morale is a perfect example of someone being transparent and showing growth/maturation.
The dude can talk about being a father, not finding love, why he thinks things haven't gone his way in terms of love, his own issues with women, why he has these issues, how he has all this money etc, but something is missing (he always alludes to this, but never goes into it), but instead he's out dissing Meghan the Stallion, and making songs written by Cash Cobain.
What people loved about Drake initially, the introspection, is no longer there. And when he does it, it's very surface level.
This (if you ain’t trying to read all that lol)
Honestly Nevermind 2 out November 2024
Him saying Abel was tryna get played in gay clubs while having HNM out is crazy

You see it. Would like him to really shift back into a pop lane again and just make some enjoyable music that doesn’t sound so resentful

Agree 100 percent. God’s Plan, Hotline Bling, Nice for What all fit that tone and all fun and great
I don’t understand the point in trying to over a***yze everything about an artist or the music they make, just live in the moment and enjoy s*** lol. Some of my favorite Drake songs have come from the last few years
The thing about Drake that he's always trying to balance IMO is that the internet is such a poor reflection of his actual fanbase
The people that actually buy albums, merchandise, concert tickets, etc. those people are not on twitter debating with others about kendrick Lamar and rap beef.
I think he needs to not do anything drastic and simply stick to the buffet style of albums that his flagship albums are known for.
A full on R&B side mission would be awesome though. Bahama Promises and Tried Our Best is some of his best work in recent memory.
