The term dated is something that is heavily overstated by some hip hop fans. I feel the art in question is just a product of its time but not unlistenable or bad as I’ve seen some say. Sure you can use it as a knock but it necessarily doesn’t hold much weight and there are better arguments that could be made when discussing the art.

This also isn’t singling out anything specific. Just a ponder I had.

The dated argument makes me laugh because it's the classics that are arguably more dated than anything else, as classics (in any genre) capture a specific time better than everything else - it's a big reason they're classics in the first place

Plus it's unfair to use being dated against an artist. They can't control if a song or album is gonna be dated, they can't see into the future

Good music is good music. And really all music is "dated", we just have biases over which sounds are "timeless"

It doesn't make it bad, it's a valid knock on it though.

I would call it a crutch

Something you bring up when you have nothing else to offer discussion wise.

I agree, someone who says "it doesn't age well" has no other decent criticism to it. It translates to "I don't like it"

i guess but at the same time it usually means the song isn’t still enjoyable

Paid In Full by Rakim was a classic and revolutionary for the time but it’s not really something you wanna bump in 2020

idk why music that sounds old is a negative thing

I listen to 50s music that sounds like it was made in the 50s and that's fine

s*** if anything it’s a compliment. “Nah sorry I don’t feel like this s*** goes well with the new Ski Mask the Slump God tracks I’m bumping” like b****, good

everything is a product of its time; poorly aged records are cliche

Something not being enjoyable is subjective. A project with sounds of its time does not mean it isn’t enjoyable. That’s an opinion you hold.

a lot of s*** like pre 2013-14 sounds ancient compared to s*** after 2015 to me.

not like music in general but just like the early 10's rap sound compared to how it progressed in the 10's

Get Rich or Die Tryin is an undisputed classic album but it is considered “dated” but that isn’t a bad thing when people celebrate its anniversary 17 years later.

If you feel it’s undeserving of its classic status because it was a product of its time, I’d call that a cop out

  • Feb 10, 2020

I agree! Like gkmc is a classic that didn’t age well, but in a good way

    Actually, no, thread is wrong

because “Didn't age well” and “sounds dated” are completely different things

Something not aging well means it sounds worse as time goes on, not that the sound is reminiscent of when it dropped

this Beethoven guy sounds so dated in 2020

I’ve been in arguments when both are used in the same vain

Depends on who you are having a discussion with . I have not seen both used in non negative connotations during an argument.

&albums dont "age". they stay the exact same and the only change is the perception of the listeners
