I can’t stop thinking about it. I understand why ppl say it’s boring and the literal first 2 minutes are maddening… but this movie is clean as f***… rapidly ascending my favorite of the year list. I have it at 4 now.
Well you tell us, was it a masterpiece?
yes it was. but idk if I would want to watch it again. glazer does somethings with the medium that is really remarkable. but the material is just horrifying.
“ZONE OF INTEREST, seen at NYFF, is a great-ish movie. It's a textbook example of the distancing devices I described in the updated Transcendental Style in Film: static camera, no pans or tilts, planometric compositions, no overs, no foregrounding, center-punched compositions, flat lighting, no music, heightened sound effects, no closeups, long takes, expressionless acting. In TS and Slow Cinema these distancing devices are used to force the viewer to find the mystery under the surface. But in Zone of Interest there is no mystery under the surface. Under the surface (literally next door) is Auschwitz, a most familiar chapter in history and drama. In this case the viewer knows exactly what's under the surface, having seen and read hundreds of films, books, documentaries and photographs about the most famous of all concentration camps . A style designed to see the unknown is used for the opposite reason. The end result is more like a parlor trick than an exploration.”

Okay okay sounds good. Will check it out asap. ASAP.
i peeped this yesterday and i must say this film has the most creative use of sound ive seen in recent history.
the choice jonathan made in letting the sounds of the terror outside of those walls tell the story instead of actually showing it was brilliant.
also did anybody else the ending was very similar to killers of the flower moon in that we are complicit in letting this story be entertainment to us?
will check this out tomorrow

I didn't get that from the ending personally but I thought it was brilliant
idk what it is bc I didnt really cry in theater but this s*** got me sobbing at home ong
my interpretation of the ending:
so the ending cuts briefly to present day with museum workers cleaning the modern day Auschwitz and at first it made me kind of angry, bc im like why are they preserving this piece of s\*\*\* it should be nuked from the face of the earth for the evil that occurred there.
But its like a final cruel joke that we have to preserve it as a piece of history to make sure the atrocities committed there are never forgotten by humanity until the end of time... And then it cuts back to Hoss on his way to enact those very atrocities.. absolutely gut wrenching stuff.
This guy is a tremendous director, no insult intended at all - but this is the Best Picture nom with the lowest chances of winning in our lifetimes
