This was a nice quiet low key film, I enjoyed it a lot. Wish they kept the original title tho.

Don't know if you can do it on mobile, but on desktop there should be three dots beside the reply icon you click on to edit the title.

    Tragic.

  • Really enjoyed this one...could have done a little more with the story but great performances from Jennifer and Brian

Didn’t enjoy this as much as most people in here. There wasn’t anything bad about it, but nothing too noteworthy either. The story (or lack thereof) was too bare bones for my liking, the emotional beats didn’t hit hard enough, and I feel like the ending wasn’t really deserved either. That argument at the pool felt a little too serious to show up a day or two later at someone’s doorstep asking to move in. 3/5 and that’s being generous because of Jennifer’s performance

Curious of what made you enjoy Aftersun more? Being both are sorta similar where they are quiet films touching on heavier subjects

Yea her being lesbian didn’t serve the story at all and just seemed like they made her lesbian for the sake of being lesbian

I took that as them saying this is a story about a platonic relationship with no chance at anything else

But then when she kissed him I wondered if saying she’s lesbian was just a safety mechanism for her like telling that rando she had a bf

You’re right that they’re both similar in the sense that they’re quiet films, but the subtext in Aftersun did it for me. If the emotional aspect of that movie didn’t hit or wasn’t executed as well as it was I prob would have disliked it even more than this

Another key thing is the relationship between the two characters. Despite the similar runtime of both movies, the father-daughter relationship in Aftersun seemed to be more fleshed out unlike the friendship in Causeway which felt oddly rushed. These type of movies all boil down to execution and this one just didn’t stick the landing for me.

To me using tactics like being lesbian cheapens the goal of making the relationship platonic, like it’s a lazy way out. And then her sexuality gets cheapened when she kisses him. Like I’m straight and I wouldn’t kiss a gay dude just because I feel bad for him. Doing that disrespects both our sexualities

I feel what you saying. I think that’s due to Aftersun already having the Father Daughter knowing each other, and already having a relationship established. Plus it’s human nature to naturally know what father/daughter represents so we already assume they are close.

Whereas in this we watched both characters meet for the first time and then become close, so that can cause it to feel more rushed.

But do you think she was telling the truth about being lesbian or was is just a safety mechanism she said to him so he wouldn’t get too close to her like she told the dude at the bar she had a bf?

Def agree. I think the main reason in why I felt like the relationship in this film was rushed wasn't so much how it developed over the course of the film and moreover how it came back together. James' implied agreement of letting her move in just felt unearned to me. There was no real catharsis which bothered me when it came to a film like this where they made it seem like the last 5-10 min was there to make things right/tie up loose ends.

It would be dumb if so, cus if that’s the case she could of just continued saying she does have a BF

Yeah I feel you on that do you think their fight was THAT serious to not warrant a fast make up?

You probably right but imma continue to believe it was just a lie she told so that he wouldn’t get too close cause it makes the movie better to me lol

Cause if she really did just kiss him cause she felt bad for him that’s lame

I mean it's not that deep that you can't make up quickly over it, but I feel like we got no apology from either party on what was said or even really any sense of remorse. To me it felt like, "hey, let's forget the other night ever happened and i'm down to move in with you to give you company if that's cool with you." That didn't really sit right with me. Call me a soft nigga but I need more than that lmfao
