I’m from NYC and knew Yams (RIP), Rocky, Illz and Ant as well since the 2000s

Yams created ASAP to be a management company in 2009ish and wanted to sign a bunch of random dudes

But he scrapped that and pulled a bunch of people together for what’s now known as ASAP the group

Rocky became a marionette doll that Yams, Illz, Bari and Nast used as a canvas for the niche s*** they each were into that hadn’t yet become mainstream

For Yams it was niche regional rap from Houston, Memphis and NYC

For Illz (who was actually the flyest ASAP member before Rocky blew up), Bari and Nast, it was niche fashion like Raf, Rick, etc

Nothing about Rocky’s music, identity or even his 2011 fashion had anything to do with him

Before ASAP, Rocky was wearing Gucci belts and Rugbys like every other Uptown nigga honestly

Yams was actually a genius, far more innovative, creative and unique than anyone including ASAP has ever truly given him credit for, due to them wanting to take credit for his ideas

Yams and Rocky were growing apart when Yams died and he was already starting to see Rocky as falling off

Yams literally did everything musical for Rocky besides write the words: picked the samples, the beats, the topics and suggested flows

Rocky’s life is a textbook example of a good looking person being in the right place at the right time

Drake made Privileged Rappers about him and it’s funny nobody realized it

Rocky still had hits tho after - Praise the Lord + Sundress - I get what you mean tho stylistically Rocky's music did change a lot after the ASAP Trilogy tapes

  • Shouldn’t be a controversial statement.

He had a chokehold on the wave when it came to fashion for a minute until like 2018 and as much as folks love Carti and how he’s running s*** now them cozy tapes and AWGE vids helped give Carti a bigger platform, he’s kinda stamped

another reason being a rapper is some lame s***, your rep is fickle as f***, especially in streaming era, this guy was the man to the point that niggas still dress like him now, but every time he pop’s his s*** people roll their eyes

Imagine dropping your last good project over a decade ago, and claiming you control the culture

He’s right though he subtly changed a lot that people don’t really attribute to him

Carti Uzi Destroy Lonely Lucki etc talking as much about high fashion as they do doesn’t happen without Rocky. Gucci Prada Louis were the only high fashion esque brands referenced before Rocky go try to find a Raf or Rick name drop in the 2000’s lol

I mean Yams was probably his creative director musically and visually. On top of the depression that probably came from that it’s honestly kinda impressive he stayed around for a decade after that without the direction Yams gave him
