Setting yourself on fire isnt the right thing

He could try to change things and keep fighting other ways. Now he's dead and people are still being killed

Wishing death on someone eh. Lame bro

I don't judge. Actually applaud him for his courage and his protest. But the way of protesting is dumb as hell to me. And i can say that if I want. You can disagree with that

If only more Redditors could engage in such effective protest and pull an Aaron Bushnell, and try to liken themselves to Buddhist monks in the 1960s while wiping off cheeto dust, we'd be closer to liberation

The person who reportedly self-immolated outside the zionist consulate in Boston in 9/11 has surfaced in this Youtube video under the name Matt Nelson. He states, "My name is Matt Nelson and I'm about to engage in an extreme act of protest. We are all culpable in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.... We are slaves to capitalism and the military industrial complex. Most of us are too apathetic to care. The protest I'm about to engage in is a call to our government to stop suppling Israel with the money and weapons it uses to imprison and murder innocent Palestinians, to pressure Israel to end the genocide in Gaza, and to support the ICC indictment of Benjamin Netanyahu and other members of the Israeli government.... A democracy is supposed to serve the will of the people, not the interests of the wealthy. Take the power back. Free Palestine."

Matt Nelson is reportedly in critical condition please keep him in your prayers.

im gonna keep it real with you guys, i don't understand how this is anything except essentially just spicy suicide. it doesn't accomplish anything. this isn't really martyrdom. it's not like he's suicide bombing an oppositional political group. nobody's mind changed because of this and also no one learned about palestine/israel through this. it gave him posthumous attention with people who already were inclined to agree with him. the original self immolation in south vietnam was so poignant because A) it was based in actual cultural mahayana buddhist folk history as connected to what they were protesting and B) the point wasn't to get attention innately, that was a knock-on effect of US press spreading the imagery to a largely disconnected populace
if i said "im gonna jump off of a building while wearing a stalin t-shirt because i hate america" it doesnt contribute anything and if anything its actively hurting the supposed cause by detracting someone able-bodied and able to make valid material contribution away from a group. please do not off yourself to make a point

Self immolation isn’t stimulating to the masses anymore when they see children exploding on Twitter every day

Self immolation isn’t stimulating to the masses anymore when they see children exploding on Twitter every day

thats definitely a small part of it but i dont think its actually about it being stimulating. it's more that the original act was seen as heroic in part due to the orientalism/exoticism of buddhism to western audiences; the fact this was underscored by the fact it very literally was informed by buddhist folk history made it even more directly poignant. images of war themselves are still very powerful to the public in spite of social media brain melt. within the domestic sphere of the west itself (because the same is true even in like, the UK) what's poignant will never really be someone doing something to themselves. we have a very externalized social culture and social cues are more built on taboos and violence. i don't say this as an endorsement, but there's a reason the charlie hebdo massacre created a (volatile + polarized, of course, but regardless) conversation about western disrespect of islam more than the post-9/11 charity drives & south park muhammad protests ever did
