Afrobeat, UK rap, dancehall and their respective artists weren’t necessarily globally appealing in 2016. Certain pockets yes, but Drake didn’t have to embrace it nor the artists and put it out as studio album.
The criticism he got from doing that at the time indicates it was a risk that paid off handsomely.
