Think this is my 4th Madge album that I've listened to. Now seeing prior that some people considered this her best album I went in with a bit of expectations of what sound truly defines her whole. Especially with this being released in 1998 her last album of the 90s. One of the sounds that quite defines the late 90s/early 00s to me is that very "futuristic" rock sound that artist such as Beck and Gorillaz used. It's like a very energetic warm guitars accompanied by looping synths (?) and the drumming is dancy and upbeat. Pair that with that Euro hypnotic techno 00s sound and that's majority of this album.

This album opens up so beautiful with this spiritually soothing song in drowned world/substitute for love. When she starts singing "my face of you, my substitute for love" over that guitar and then the drums and bass come in shi had me

I rlly wish there was another song like that on the album but none came that close. Now following this we start getting the sound i was describing above with Stars. Twangy guitars and hypnotic synths or whatever da hell that sound is. Since it's track 2 I'm still hm okay Madge but as we get over the following tracks I began to enjoy it a lil less. (Perhaps 1st oof) The title track Ray of Light doesn't quite do it for me, it has parts tht i like but overall it drags and feels like it doesn't kno what it wants to rlly do.

Candy perfumed girl is trip-hop done boring and Skin is a euro techno dance pop sound that i rlly dont like of that point in time. but funny enough I do like it on Sky fits heaven and Nothing Really matters. Those are bops done right in that sound.

Now after these there's well..an interesting song to say the least and i can confidently say the worst one on the album. I have no idea what she was thinkin with Shanti. It's giving M.I.A but white and lowkey cultural appropriation.

Drums go hard atleast. Anw we get an absolute palate cleanser with Frozen. You're frozennn when you're hearts not opennnnn

Sadly that's where this ends for me too. Up until the closer the songs blend in or overstay their welcome. The final track to me is a bit interesting cause while I'm not too fond of it it still serves as a good way to end this album. The quiteness that keeps building up as she sings about running away and reflecting on her spiritually surroundings. Ending on "I ran I ran and I'm still running away" feels soothingly poetic.

If I were to rank it among the other Madge albums I've listened it'd be prolly my 3rd fav behind her first two.

    Overall 6-6.5/10
    Fav songs:
    Substitute for love
    Frozen
    Nothing Really Matters
    Sky Fits Heaven

L for not catching onto the majesty of The Power of Good-Bye

real for recognizing greatness of the first song at least that might crack my top 5 from her

    Is this it

    The strokes @shaleirose

If u heard it that’s your fault

Listened yesterday. I really enjoyed it! It’s impressive that they come across as fully realized as they do and that was only their debut album. I like how it sounds raw without feeling amateurish, and it’s super straightforward and driven by the instrumentation. Julian’s vocal delivery is unique to me, his mix on a few songs is a little tough to listen to at high volumes (especially on The Modern Age), but you grow accustomed to it as the album progresses. Also, this album seriously made me wanna play Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater with this in the background, I might boot that up this weekend

Favorite tracks are the title track, Barely Legal, Someday, Last Nite, When It Started, and Take It or Leave It

I’m definitely gonna embark on the rest of their discography before their new album drops in June

    BIG lifeline

fav tracks: steppin it up, 4 moms, pad & pen, bustas lament, the love (top 3), scenario remix (top 3), hot s***(top 3), and jazz

start it up - nothing too special just a calm intro, i f*** with the flow though so it holds well for me

find a way - i feel like ive heard this growing up in passing but i cant tell for sure, however i love the hook and that bassline screams dilla had me doing the diddy bop

da booty - those drums are heavy and hollow, im still in amaze at how crisp the production is on this album but as far as this particular show i personally couldve done without it but its not bad

steppin it up - BUSTA? REDMAN? YEAH THIS SONG WAS A PLEASANT SURPRISE FOR ME. LITERALLY TWO OF MY FAVORITE RAPPERS OAT ON A TRIBE ALBUM FROM MY BIRTH YEAR AND THEY BODIED THEIR VERSES and phife snapped too not to mention that beat KNOCKS

like it like that - one of them ones you just smoke to and let loop loud, this one was a f***in vibe fr we need songs to sound like this again it feels like being inside of a bubble on a sunny afternoon

common ground - another one that you just put on while you smoke and just take in everything they say cause i swear this song resonated with me on a spiritual level by the 3rd listen, we gotta come to a common ground baby fr

4 moms - didnt realize this was an instrumental until halfway through, i though they just had a long as intro and it didnt matter to me i was like the whole time waiting to hear phife until i realized what the title meant amazing song. love it and just in time for mothers day

his name is mutty ranks - this one of them ones i like to refer to as a ā€œspittaā€ track, they just rap and get that s*** off on a song and thats exactly what they do here over a hard ass knockin beat. i f*** with this one

give me - nore i love his rap style on features, its so fun lmao this one was a cool vibe, nothing special nothing wack just a groovy track with a dope flute (i think?)

pad & pen - OKAY THIS ONE FKD ME UP ONE OF MY FAVORITE RAPPERS ON OFT USED THIS BEAT ON HIS MIXTAPE AND IVE ALWAYS LOVED THE BEAT SO IMAGINE MY REACTION WHEN I FIRST HEARD THAT BASSLINE COME IN

bustas lament - yo yo yo yoyoyo yo yo yo

this s*** was on repeat for a good min

hot 4 u - that sound in the background is f***ing addicting i cant tell exactly what it is but F*** that s*** is an earworm, and the flow they use on this one

against the world - this one feels like a bad boy collab, i was execting to hear mase come on anytime soon but phife and tip brought that essense and elevated it of course

the love - bro. this f***ing song. i wish i heard this YEARS ago, my music would sound so much different off this one song alone bro. that bass. that snare. the cadence. the vocal layering. the scratch beat breakdown with that nasty flow. yeah man this is real hip hop (unc talk)

rock rock yall - i love rap man, and this song is another great example. just confidence, punchlines, charisma, and bars. AND SHAWTY SNAPPED. SHE PROBABLY GOT THE STANDOUT VERSE OF THE WHOLE ALBUM NO BULLSHIT i replayed her verse so many times on first listen i barely got through the track lmao

scenario remix - literally no words this has been one of my personal all time favs since i discovered leaders of the new school back in elementary so this song is very special to me

hot s***- this song sounds like what they expected the 2020s to feel like, just mechanical and gritty as s***. and phife is going off as usual (he cooked on the whole album but this verse stood out to me)

oh my god remix - i heard the original version before this version (seen the video on yt) and was a fan ever since, i love phifes verse so fckn much (i like my beats harder than 2 day old s*** is one of the hardest lines ive ever heard in my life fr) but this beat caught me off guard first listen, and now i dont remember how the original beat sounds and i aint mad lol s*** still hard

jazz - this another beat i heard somewhere growing up but regardless i f***ing love that drum beat i sampled it for my album and i discovered it from another song that uses the drum loop, this was such a nice rediscovery i can let the instrumental just run in the background all day if i wanted no kidding, very serene

one two s*** - just when i thought i heard every busta collab from the 90s, here comes another surprise feature and of course he snapped on this going back and forth with tip, they couldve made a duo ground (the abstract and the dragon cough cough), this one couldve fit on when disaster strikes perfectly

all in all man this was a great album, wouldve never guessed it was released in 98 this could easily fit in the mid 2000s or even blog era 2010s (not only sonically but also thematically, which is the sign of a timeless album to me)

really fun listen to this all week, a few songs wont be leaving my rotation anytime soon

Here’s my review for Confessions of Fire.

Compared to the rest of Cam’ron’s discography, this is my least favorite project of his. however, the three track run from Horse & Carriage to Prophecy is elite 90s rapping. I wish I loved this album more, but it was just aight to me overall.

cant even blame yah tbh, it was vital for him to make this album before we got to the cam we know today, shoot if the theme was different i def would’ve suggested his second album instead

my fav are is death, d rugs, confessions, and who’s nice

but at least you got you horse & carriage out of it

    Hope you're ready to

    the whole album

I’m not gonna go crazy in depth bc ion got time for that rn and OP wants my review.

Usually don’t LOVE this style of vocal but on the songs I like off this, while it takes a second for me to get into, it works. Loved the mixing on the 2025 remaster I peeped, the gatars were crispy, the bass lines were nice and the drums hit especially on Disappointment

What really got me was how undeniable some of the melodies or grooves were. didn’t expect some of the gatar lines or vibes on this album

Need to listen again but I’m a sucker for jangle pop. Legit if her vocals weren’t so Celtic I’d like more of the album

Songs saved: Ode to My Family, Twenty One, Empty, Everything I Said, Disappointment, Dafodil Lament (iffy on this one from what i remember)

Last week I specifically said I was anti rock at the moment and this guy really gave me a textbook emo punk tape

You should be jailed for giving me this tape with the vocals on the pure screamo part of the album luckily the vocalist (idk who it is) pops what I’m assuming is an antipsychotic and makes some really nice sexy songs like deftones in betweeen putting his psychosis on tape .

    Best songs
    Crystal lake
The. Opinionated are so opionated (emotional interlude)
A)The View from Here Is...B) A Brick Wall

Textbook screamo this is what new gen ragers think they be doing on stage nowadays
