as an alcoholic (not joking) and someone whos been to lots of AA meetings and multiple rehabs I can tell you a lot of alcoholics are middle aged-older guys who repress their emotions (likely) due to societal conditioning which tells them men cant express their feelings.

cops especially think they need to be cool and macho therefore I'm sure lots of them are constantly stifling their emotions and use alcohol as a relief valve.
