  • I’ve said it already in other threads but I really think this needs to be discussed more.

Apple Music, Spotify and the likes recommend music based on what you’ve already “consumed”. This creates a feedback loop. You end up “discovering” artists who are (very) similar to those you appreciate. You might think “okay, that’s cool, so what?” Well the thing is: you’re not the only one in this case. Everybody is stuck in this loop and the consequences are simple: artists pushed by the industry become less and less creative, more standardized by a set of criteria defined by algorithms.

This whole system is even more obvious on Apps like TikTok. Spend a few hours on this f***ing app and you’ll feel like Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day”: everybody repeats the same jokes, the same concepts and these videos will keep reappearing again and again because TikTok’s algorithms assumed that’s what you want to watch.

The culture is stuck. Most artists sound the same to you? Now you know why.

  • it's up to you though

  • these terrible algorithms are only as strong as you make them

It’s not about me. Hundreds of millions of people use these playlists.

(I pulled that number out of my ass but I’m pretty sure I’m right)

you’re right but like others have said it’s up to you to consume music using the algorithms

word of mouth will always give you the best music, so if ur on a music forum u should be ight

do some fkn investigation man it ain't that hard

That’s what I (try to) do. I’m talking about the industry as a whole and how most things people like are more and more defined by algorithms.

The general population might be fine with this. People who are really into music or into discovering new stuff will still seek out different music.

It's the modern day equivalent of people just listening to whatever is getting played on the radio.

artists pushed by the industry become less and less creative, more standardized by a set of criteria defined by algorithms.

Feel like it's less about the algorithm and more just artists copying something because it works.

This is why you see people copy carti, thug, x, juicewrld etc a lot.

But I don't listen to music playlists so it's w/e

Exactly this, people who want different music still have (and have even more honestly) the capabilities to go out and find different music. The curated playlists are for those people that don’t do that. If you’re listening to those playlists it’s because you want to.

  • I don't think this is actually a problem because I make my own playlists and so does everyone else I know. Do people actually listen to those front page playlists? Half of them are songs I don't like so I never tried them again I think that's the case with majority of people
