Honestly though I think Romulus is such a gigantic piece of dogshit, I’d rather have garland launch a whole new thing in the Alien universe if he was to do it (though I also wanna see Ridley finish out what he was doing with David as a character)

I think you may be overhating Romulus a little too much
It’s certainly not Alien: Earth levels of bad lmao

Ridley’s modern Alien movies are just as weak (Fassbender being a domestic abuser IRL doesn’t help either).

Honestly I don’t think it’s possible to ever overhate Romulus. It’s the worst film of the decade and one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen happen to an IP. Literally I’m confident an AI slop movie with the alien would be better.

I don’t even like Prometheus but atleast fassbender is incredible in it and it has a strong first half. Alien covenant is the 2nd best alien film imo. It’s arguably better than the original Alien for big stretches too, especially in that 2nd act which is peak gothic horror and features perhaps the best scene ever in any Alien film with the two David’s playing the flute.

seeing fans praise and call for his return in just about everything w no critical pause has been quite annoying

Where’s this outrage for Brad Pitt? Or does the outrage only exist for celebrities with s***ty PR?

The entire domestic abuse case got withdrawn like 16 years ago and yall wanna cancel him for that? Far, far worse and far more successful actors and actresses to go after than him.

  • The Ridley prequels are significantly more interesting than anything Disney has done with the IP since. I don’t hate Romulus as much as ImLikeThat, but it’s definitely just a “greatest hits” compilation. I’m looking forward to seeing the conclusion to the Prometheus “trilogy” if it ever actually happens.

do i speak for everyone? no. i feel the same way about brad pitt. and u just answered your own question regarding why he's still perceived well (PR). let alone fassbender is a lesser known name by comparison and his conveniently timed hiatus/reemergence has allowed him to continue a successful career.

also, the premise is just false - there's plenty of people who have censured pitt's behavior at length, but they're a vocal minority pushed to the margin for obvious reasons.

addressing prevalent abuse isnt an "either or" thing, nor does time negate its occurrence and the ways in which it affects victims. idc how long ago it was, esp if he never even bothered to reckon with it publicly.

tl;dr f*** out my face and jerk your beloved actor off without quoting me to do it.

The case literally got thrown out and was 16 years ago. If it was dismissed and neither party ever publicly talked about it, there’s nothing to reckon with on it.

I have and would defend that take.

Fede is one of the best set piece guys in the industry. You can't actually say anything about the action of that film or the scale of it that isn't complimentary. Every one of those situations is tense and exciting and makes full use of the space and all the elements therein. That's a nonstarter for me. I would love to see him do Terminator. He has a real sense for where things happen and how they chain together and how to keep the suspense going as it unfolds.

He's also quite a provocateur and thoughtful about the material. The things in Romulus people point out as drawbacks make perfect sense to me. He is interrogating the nostalgia that can be corny or redundant in the text. He mostly concludes that's it an abomination in doing so—the Xeno, the Android resurrection, the baby monster—but there is actually sentiment and love there as well—Andy stuttering through and stepping on an iconic line after being programmed by Rain's late father with his myriad corny dad jokes. The Android that represents the corporation is also paternal over the Alien and it's demented and bankrupt and evil. That's all in the text.

I didn't hear much salient criticism at all beyond the AI which I found horrifying in a way that totally met the moment irl. I wish they'd kept it. I felt the repulsion. I never heard much at all about the Star Wars franchise doing the same s*** without much of a purpose beyond IP.

What set pieces are in Romulus that aren’t just embarrassingly boring renditions of superior set pieces we’ve already seen in the original 2 Alien films? The whole film feels like an AI recreation of those 2 movies combined. The Alien itself is barely even in the movie and feels like an afterthought. We spend most of the film with the face huggers and that thing in the third act which just looks cringe and the very opposite of intimidating.

Also saying he’s critiquing nostalgia is hilarious since the entire movie is reliant on it. Right down to the deepfake acting going on of old characters. He’s critiquing nostalgia? Maybe he should do something actually new then.

The entire film feels like an empty thrill ride with very little actual thrills because every “scary” scene just feels like its intended to remind us of something from the original films and the stakes are gone almost immediately after the scare is over. When we see the Alien kill someone in the original or see the facehugger attack someone, there is real stakes to it. The effect of those scare extends throughout the story and has real impact on the story and its characters. What effect does these characters running away from an army of face huggers like it’s an amusement park ride have on the rest of the story? Every character is pretty much disposable because they’re all idiotic besides the main character and her AI friend. We essentially want them all to die. Nothing in their actions makes one think the xenomorph is a genius cold killer. It just feels like you’re watching Jason slaughter dumbasses. Like I’m very aware throughout I’m watching someone make his nerdfest ChatGPT assisted sandbox based on his love of vastly superior films.
