sup yall. i did a lil research on the origins of the word "alternative" in music. then i thought a little bit about what it really means to be "alternative". i looked at rock, rap, r&b, and fashion and their versions of "alt"
what do you guys think when you hear the word "alternative"?
I feel like there's way too many different levels to alternative. Radiohead was labeled that too and they've been massive
I like we are getting alternative stuff in the poppier realm but idk.
Didn't watch the video, did it talk about turnstiles and that side of alternative right now too?
I consider it to be: "alternative to classic rock", ie alt-rock; alternative rock. However alternative bands like AiC and Nirvana have evolved into classic rock staples, which can obfuscate the meaning of "alternative".

nah im a dumbass for not mentioning turnstile tho in retrospect lol, mostly when i talked about today's rock i was like, there is no "mainstream" rock anymore, basically any kind of rock that people listen to and actively make, is a derivative of one of the alternative rock forms from the 90s (shoegaze, grunge, indie, whatever). so its just funny it gets called "alternative" now, its much more of a vestigial name bc id argue that is no longer the "alternative" to how rock music sounds

that's how it started! so in the video i looked at the other ways people use the word alternative, especially in r&b, where people like frank, sza and the weeknd were "alternatives" to more classic r&B stuff. but nowadays id argue they arent the alternative anymore—i think most r&b acts seeing success these days are directly from their lineage

Can't stand green day. I apologize. I had to shut the video off. Aural cancer.

Seems like you're producing wonderful content. Glad to have happened upon this thread.
I consider Smashing Pumpkins to be the quintessential alt-rock band.
I happened across their famous 1993 airport (?) acoustic promotional concert. The songwriting talents of Corgan are immeasurable. Would've been interesting to hear aged Cobain and Corgan collaborate.
