I feel bad saying this because as an Ethiopian I really want to support Weeknd's music but after disliking his music more and more with each album (except for my dear melancholy) he puts out After Hours which might be the last straw for me.

I've tried listening to it a couple times and I just cant get into this 80's pop influenced house/electronic whatever you want to call it sound that's predominately on it. I mean my favorite song on it is probably Heartless and that was out a while before the album.

I know you shouldn't always expect your favorite artists to stay the same forever and that progression and whatever is good but i just feel like this is progression in a completely different lane I just dont enjoy. I just miss that dark moody r&b sound. While his lyrical content is still pretty much the same I just dont like the sound of it now. I just wish he would still mix more of that "old sound" in now.

For context some r&b type albums I have enjoyed this year is dvsn, brent faiyaz, partynextdoor, and don tolliver's new projects. What do yall think about weeknd's sound now though?

yea the production just sounds weird with his voice imo. i miss when the production was so atmospheric and wrapped around his voice so perfectly.

he’ll eventually explore other styles. He’s leaned into three different variations of the 80’s synth sound so I think he’s gonna branch out these next few projects

thats what I'm saying bro, his voice fit the dry dark and spacey production rather than what sounds like a tame impala rip off

Afterhours overhyped as s***. Just a bunch of weeknd stans on here that are trying to make it seem like he didnt drop another dud. Too late, escape from la & nothing compares only tracks worth going back to

  • May 12, 2020

    Yea I f***ing hate it

    Don’t mind a couple songs but I can’t fw a whole album.

im not really saying to return all the way to the trilogy. i feel like my dear melancholy was a good mix of both his old and new sound.

I actually was never a fan of his earlier projects.

I'm a big fan of starboy and After hours.

starboy was actually decent. once again their were enough of the darker moodier sounding stuff to keep me satisfied it wasnt like all 80s electropop s*** like he does now.

his best work was definitely the trilogy and kiss land though imo.

For sure theyre not bad by any means, just not my taste. Really like his newer sound, i really like that his vocals have evolved a lot since then.

    i liked starboy the song.

  • Can't really get into this album either, really liked MDM and Starboy is more of a mess of an album compared to AH but there's a lot more songs on there I'd rather return to.

It's not really bad but something's off about it, maybe just too pop for me
