Universal Pictures’ PVOD experiment in “Trolls World Tour” turned out to be so lucrative, that the studio announced Tuesday it would begin releasing first-run movies on demand as well as in theaters. AMC Theatres took that as the first shot in a war: The country’s largest theater chain will no longer play any Universal films in its 1,000 cinemas worldwide — if studios wants to break the longstanding theatrical window system, AMC is demanding a seat at the table, CEO Adam Aron wrote in a letter.

    this is pretty huge

off topic but trolls is legitimately one of the worst animated movies. i hate the designs.

Theater chains are gonna want to be the ones to bring these movies into peoples home and distribute them how they see fit. Movie studios will not be releasing their own films.

People want to be able to have the theater experience still and releasing VOD first and endorsing that to other studios kills that industry and puts people out of business.

That’s why the studios have to partner up with chains like AMC,they can kinda bring the experience home. I feel like it definitely won’t be VOD,more like a PPV format.

they just supposed to let universal f*** them?

  • Apr 29, 2020

AMC has their On Demand service, Fandango has FandangoNOW, I think they should use this and say “Alright, 4 weeks in theaters then it hits AMC and Fandango for 4 weeks before iTunes”

In that second stint of 4 weeks theaters get a cut of that revenue along with it playing on their screens (by then the films will be on less screens anyway)

    Shouldn’t be that hard

they never said they would drop them on vod the same day as theatres. if anything maybe 2-3 weeks after which for films like trolls and other family films doesnt seem like a big deal. now amc is gonna lose s*** like fast franchise and jurrasic

    seems like their loss

I highly doubt they stop showing universal movies, maybe they’ll play chicken for a few months. Just tryna stand their ground.

Release same day on PPV with the whole theater experience included(previews, countdowns all the same commercials you’d see theaters)price it around a family of 4 at a matinee (around $75)let people decide whether they want to pay that or not. Leave it on PPV for at least 3 wks and release it VOD for $19.99.
There’s no way an idea like this would cut into theater revenue, especially if it’s just a one time viewing like in theaters. Having this alternative would be amazing and probably help skyrocket the home theater equipment business big time.
