I just finished episode 5, and it’s definitely the best one I’ve watched so far, so I’m assuming that’s why

So I just finished the book a week ago, and it’s wild how they COMPLETELY changed the character of William Henry Devereaux (Hank in the show lol). The book itself was definitely boring at times, so after reading it I was surprised that they chose to make it into a TV series. The inner dialogue of Devereaux is what made it interesting, and that’s hard to portray in a tv show (though they’ve tried at times on the show sparingly, and not super well).

But again the character of Devereaux is just totally different in the book — comes off as way more intelligent and very capable (just not working to his potential), and also super likeable and funny ( the one in the book would never have his wife cheat on him lol ). And while Bob is great as always, the way they wrote the character for the show is just SO whiney, and incompetent, and has huge confidence issues (which the one in the book had to an extend, but they were way more hidden/under the surface). Just not likeable at all.

Also, the show clearly made a huge effort to be politically correct — the character of “Orshee” in the book was one of the funniest parts, and they removed the character in the show lol.
