If I made a song that got 10 million plays and I made less money off of it than I make working a 9 to 5 I’d kill myself no cap
its ridiculous

labels would HATE it but it makes a lot of sense to me
obviously it would have to be adjusted to work across the real numbers of streams and s*** but look at this
artists make more from my proposed scheme than the current payout right up until their song has 180m streams
this is more of a discussion one! I wanna hear what ideas you guys have/whether you think an artist friendly industry will every happen and how etc
thank you for this. a thread on how label scouting works in 2020 would also be nice or just how artists generally get attention
Yeah, great idea - Spotify/AM would absolutely LOVE to give $5K for 50K streams, instead of just $160
Could've been an interesting topic if you came up with a realistic idea ..
I don't think I can contribute much to this conversation because I am stupid, but good job safe.
btw off topic but Emotion side b is in that picture so I like the thread even more. Go listen to Roses everyone!!
edit: and that Ingrid Michaelson album has 1 song i really like on it

might make a thread detailing how I'd blow up if I was an artist next

do you understand how tax brackets work?
the payout from Spotify is the same overall because most streams on Spotify come from artists who already have over 20m streams on their song
Spotify now pays 20% less to them which allows them to pay more for artists with less streams

yeah and like what type of audience is sustainable and metrics to prove that. why can some artists stay afloat with fewer releases with larger time gaps between them

I want to know what you guys think
What are the biggest issues with the industry right now in your opinions?
What changes do you agree with here and what don’t you agree with?
What changes do you think could help?
Do you think things are getting better or worse for small artists?
I think its great that the music side of the industry is being democratized but I feel like the industry side is very much gatekept and behind closed doors.
like you said about the pop charts but almost the entirety of it is label backed and dominated by the big 3 which doesnt really represent the diversity of artists that are gaining popularity rn.
It seems like you have to be Chance or Frank in the sense that you find unmitigated success before going the independent route and that small artists hoping to find success are being forced to have to go through labels despite artists being able to create industry standard quality music by themselves.
I don't know all that much about labels but wdyt @safe
what do you think small artists can do to find success independently

this is interesting. We all know those artists have a more dedicated fanbase, but why and how do you get there? Like some artists can start taking 3 or 4 years breaks just from the first album without losing or even gaining fans. While others try and fail, or have to release almost every year.
I know in some cases, music is all the artist has. And others, they do things like movies, entrepreneurship, or simply promote the album for a long time. Some can afford to get out of our faces for some times while others have to release about every year to stay afloat, whether they like it or not.
