It's the 3rd most expensive artwork sold by a living artist (No. 4 when adjusted for inflation).

    onlineonly.christies.com/s/first-open-beeple/beeple-b-1981-1/112924

It was an auction. Bids hit $1 million within just 10 minutes of going on sale.

man someone explain this to me

can give you a basic example.

In printmaking, if you're making a screen print or a lithograph print a artist can make as many copies as he want but that first copy is the original

like he makes 100 screen prints on the back of the first one they write 1/100 and so on, that first one is the original.

Making a NFT out of that first uploaded picture got to do it from metamask thats the original copy of whatever digital art you have. even if people can simply download the image and do whatever with it, theres a minted digital imprint of the first copy and whoever bought it from the auction has ownership of that first minted copy.

it just depends on clout if it auction out big like this and beeple has alot of art clout before hand.
