Like every English-speaking scholar now bemoans the tremendous chicanery of grammar school, something irks me about all that belligerent language. Did the clerks and grammarians of yore sacrifice truth for function? Were they dumb enough to reduce something as fundamental as the structural vocabulary of English to a mindless mask for superficial meanings? Maybe not. When I teach now, I talk about "Oved (penneter)n (throat)." Not "pulder" as in prouser of the head. But houmard. There are new small boys who speak in the same manner.
