It’s got those modal touches of introspection and mystery I love from people like Trent Reznor and Terence Blanchard and Ryuichi Sakamoto
Wait FlyLo made You’re Dead without knowing how to play instruments?
That’s actually insane, He had to be working with session musicians or something because there’s no way
Yeah hes said he didn't know how to play any actual instruments till way way later
But that's not uncommon for people with Rap and Electronic backgrounds in production tho
He used daws and a lot of hardware gear, and for full on instrument pieces he would have people play for him which he would then edit and evolve from there to make it fit
You can do and get by a lot with a piano roll, a metronome, and some natural/familiar rhythm
Idk what's worst itt
The capping for Andre
Or pretending that Jazz is just niggas f***ing around doing whatever when it's literally its own musical art form with its own rules and scale and is one of the most fiercest n competitive genres of all time where technical play is literal king along with the way to bounce off of that technical play to create something of your own
Half of jazz is literally about showing off how good and crazy you are at playing while still keeping within the culture
Breaking rules while still being within the rules

Oh for sure, I’ve seen people draw in whole orchestral pieces on a piano roll
Still pretty impressive for someone to make a whole album that sounds like jazz samples without sampling or knowing how to actually play
Flylo the goat, Need a new captain Murphy album asap tho

Like them niggas literally created Rap battles before rap battles but for instruments LOL and s*** talk each other and their skills all day to today đź’€ đź’€

Def agree.
And honestly, generally speaking, with digital music it's really about the overall idea and plan and being able to execute it.
As long as you're passable but do it in a dope and crazy way it works and is impressive.
The sound scape, mixing and effects FlyLo always had and created has always been wild and high level - plus him being able to direct others when needed which a lot people cannot do.
Throw "actual playing" on top of it and you got an even crazier monster. Understanding even the basics of how a irl instrument actually works, reacts and behaves too will help so much more with your midi and vst instruments as well and make s*** really crazy that one or the other can't do on their own.
I loved Me&My from 2018, that showed me he doesn't need to be rapping but I would love some vocals
That 2-track EP was far more potent than anything he's dropped since
Def agree.

Since you actually play, What would you recommend as some good practice? For keyboard
I know scales, some basic chords and my ears are pretty trained but I just have not been able to get my fingers moving the way they need to

I'm no expert and idk keys precisely off the top of my head but I can play.
I don't have a real piano myself (I do play on one tho sometimes) but honestly any full size midi keyboard with full pressure keys (I forget the correct term for them, but it's so you can get real feedback of tension, note velocity and note extension that reg general MIDIs don't have) for "true" playing. You also get weighted keyboards if you want as well but imo it's not necessary and in some cases depending what you're doing can be a bit of a hindrance. Like for example my weakness is fast consistent play and weighted keys would just slow me down even more. But if you're looking for a more authentic piano feel or just used to a real piano then def get it.
You honestly don't need to be a master pianist for 90 percent of things outside of perhaps impressing people that right in front of you. Most concert pianist can't make a song and an ok, average or good piano player can't do full on ensembles. And most music producers genuinely fall into the ok to average section besides a few, but structure and editing and stop n go play helps a lot. The main thing, if you're solo, is too know what sounds and keys go with what for your full track idea and have it lead somewhere.
But yeah, just make sure it's at least full keys for the board with velocity pressured keys. Weighted if wanted but it isn't necessary.
Getting a synth can help a lot too with how fun they usually are. I have the Korg Monologue, 4 voice.

and idk if i hown u these before or if you heard them before (ive posted them a few times on here cuz theyre some of my most proudest pieces ive made of instrumentals) but these are examples of my pure instruemntal playing og compositions no samples or pre made loops just all by me:
a major piano play, n strings
horns played off a midi in the intro wth the idea of me mimicking how horns actually work irl (i used to play some sax in middle school)
brass playing and then later on piano
Andre 3000 has the best discography in rap history? I must have missed that. He only has a flute album.
Outkast has one of the greatest discographies and changed the genre. Not Andre 3000. Outkast. Yall need to get that right. Mentioning any accomplishment of Andre without saying Big Boi’s name in the same breath is a crime.
Real
Jazz does have cohesion and a language to it lol
This is actually jazz slander
Free form music doesn't mean doing whatever - Jazz has an entire play method, style and logic to it in itself
yeah ofc but im talking to someone here that would turn on b****es brew and claim it’s just a buncha guys playing whatever
like the ep isn’t nearly free form to that extent
Jazz is one of the genres where technical ability is critiqued the most lmao
this isnt whiplash man it’s andre 3000 posting recordings off his voice memo app

This is also a demo album

I cannot stand niggas who think OutKast was basically only Andre smh. Idk when niggas got to the point of glazing Andre so hard that they disrespect Big Boi
Lmao at niggas who thought this wasn’t a rollout

why are you acting so personally offended by his harmless piano tunes
S*** harming niggas ears
S*** harming niggas ears
idk the point of releasing this but nothing about these piano “sketches” warrant a reaction like this
This is also a demo album
he nowhere calls it a demo album, its just him literally screwing around 10 years ago on pianos and midis that he dug out his harddrive
he says there is no concept to it and he doesnt even really know chords or any type of real play even tho he's doing full live playing sessions as tracks, for some reason
