The idea behind flattening the curve was allowing an initial rash of cases to be handled with utmost care, not just to isolate from the virus for 10-12 months. A huge proportion of the population is going to get sick with COVID-19, but ideally we've bought ourselves enough time to get a bed and an effective treatment option if that time comes. Those aren't realistic in every city even today, but in June they may be.
