Allen IversonI was about to comment the same exact thing. All of Kaytranada’s s*** is really dope, always… yet forgettable if that makes sense. I’m not exactly sure if I’d say generic like you did, but something is definitely missing from his music. I’m not sure what.
he used to be a lot more involved on unconventional compositions and sound design while nowadays it feels like he's kind of just throwing things together formulaically
intimidated ep was great because the artists on it were great song writers, while 99.9% was great because of really interesting combinations of chord progressions, sound design, drum programming and song structures.
like drive me crazy has the icy pluck and filtered lead melody with 3 drum patterns and 2 different kicks in just the intro verse and actual transitory chords between the intro to the hook while this song is literally 1 loop w different elements dropping out until the outro.
