sung tongs to mpp is one of the craziest runs ever. like i am struggling to think of another band that delivered 4 perfect projects back to back like that
What would you say their classics/must listens are?
hell yea, was wondering why there wasn't an Animal Collective thread. Nice flowchart you posted too. I'm a big AC fan and they're one of my favorite bands but I still have so much of their music to explore.
2019 was a great year for AC. Really enjoyed some of the songs on their live album Ballet Slippers, though the mastering was disappointing. Buoys was good but I'm not sure I really like the direction Panda Bear went for, much preferred PBMTGR.
Most of all though, Avey Tare killed it and I'm most excited about his work now out of all the members. Cows On Hourglass Pond was a top 5 album for me and got play all year. Conference of Birds / Birds in Disguise was good for what it was too. I used to think Panda Bear was my favorite from AC but Tare is making a case for himself. His combination of singing and jammy yet experimental production if what I always liked most about AC.
Looking forward to what Animal Collective have in store for 2020. Would be amazing to get a group album and three solo albums from Avey Tate, Panda Bear, and Deakin.
Three years later, how much more of AC's music have you explored and what have you thought of their output in these last three years?

I already knew their catalog pretty well cause I've been a fan since like 2008
they're probably past their prime as a group but I think their solo work of the past three years has been really impressive and is worth checking out. mainly Panda Bear and Avey Tare, you can tell they're both still inspired to explore new sounds
the group albums have been good too just not on the same level as their earlier work. but then again Prester John is one of their best songs imo
to answer your other question, I think their classics/must listens are
Strawberry Jam
Sung Tongs
Feels
Merriweather Post Pavillion
then solo work I'd start with
Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper by Panda Bear
Cows on Hourglass Pond by Avey Tare

honestly the ones I mentioned in that post: Sung Tongs, Feels, Strawberry Jam and MPP (their most popular and well known album). They also have some great EP’s in there like Water Curses and Fall Be Kind which are worth checking out too.
personally im not really a huge fan of their noisy stuff pre-Sung Tongs, and their stuff after MPP has been hit or miss, but Bridge to Quiet and Time Skiffs have been a return to form imo.
in terms of solo stuff, i think person pitch by panda bear is a must listen. deakin also dropped a great album in 2016.

Thank you
thank god they're remastering Spirit. It's still their best album imo and is in dire need of a remaster. I hope they continue with this and remaster Danse and Here Comes The Indian even though they're generally not seen as classics.
Wonder if they’re doing another short US tour for this record like they did last year, I hope so Magicians from Baltimore
i've only tried out a few AnCo albums, mainly the 03-09 run and Time Skiffs and never really got into em. 4 tracks into this and i'm enjoying it a lot. the tracks are more bare and they're actual good tunes, which may get hidden behind all the tricks and effects sometimes. they're just rockin out
yeah this was nice that first 4 track run was really hitting for me. i'm gonna relisten to this and time skiffs, or just get into the whole discog sometime soon
I added two songs to the Strawberry Jam tracklist, which are from the same era:
If SJ released like this then I genuinely believe it would have been regarded as their best album
