I think they're best watched in tandem. The beginning of Brotherhood basically assumes you've either watched the original or read the manga.
I do think some of the earlier storylines were better in the original

Vegeta is more aggressive mentally, if they fought to the death, Vegeta would kill Goku... Also Goku would have no one to bail him out like early in his Frieza fight.

Death Note is the greatest anime ever.
a vast majority (including death note) have garbage tropes/stereotypes that make it near impossible to consider the anime genre anything more then a guilty pleasure watch.
DBZ/Naruto/One Piece have all long since run their course and aren’t as good as people make them out to beFullmetal Alchemist is underrated

You have to give all anime a slight excuse for writing because there is a huge culture and language barrier between translations
