After doing some brief key animation for studio Pierrot on Baoh The Visitor and the Mamoru Oshii directed Gosenzo Sama Banbanzai in 1989, Honda would move on the next year to work on Nadia: The Secret of The Blue Water.

    Honda at 0:38 to 0:47
This would be the first seriously serial tv series Gainax would be taking on. Honda’s first KA on Episode 1 is seriously amazing. The feats of spacing, rhythm makes it feel a an actual circus performance.

While Nadia would be a mixed bag of a show, there still was a lot of spirit to it and series director Hideaki Anno would improve with his next installment, but we’re not quite there yet.

Honda would spend some time doing freelance work on several titles from 1991-94 these would include: Ariel Deluxe, Roujin Z, Otaku No Video, Moonlight Pierce, Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Afterglow of Zeon, Fatal Fury 2: New Battle, Mighty Space Miners and Fatal Fury The Motion Picture.
Several of these titles would feature pretty short key animation from Honda. Otaku No Video would be a standout amongst the titles as it featured animation direction from him, carrying over some similar character design aesthetics from Nadia (which he also AD’d on episode 30 and 35).

feel free to watch it is…odd. real life interviews with otakus
Honda’s brief KA on here would see him starting to implement wavy foam like smear lines

, and he would carry this over to the Fatal Fury franchise.

Honda would do some…fan-service for Fury 2

Neon Genesis Evangelion was and still is one of the most influential anime ever made, and Takeshi Honda was right within the thick of its development. After proving himself in Gunbuster, Nadia and countless other projects Honda was brought on as a chief animator, and animation director at the age of 27. Honda and Shinya Hasegawa were both assigned to series animation direction and oversight of the entire show. One of the best parts about Honda working on Evangelion was not only did he do supervision he also did illustrations.

This isn’t even peak Honda, but goodness he’s so fire here.

Honda’s key animation show’s up extensively in Episode 1 and 2. Honda show’s an incredible degree of weight in mecha like movement. Honda would even have to animate his own mechanical designs due to Evangelion mech designer Ikuto Yamashita’s sheets having “several undefined elements to it. The Eva could not even lift its arms without hitting its head”

Honda at 0:53 to 1:12 notice in the fall after Unit 1 lifts off Sachiel you can see his foam smears, even when it goes forward at the start too.

Corrections are a pretty important part within Honda’s work on Evangelion. On Episode 9 Honda’s corrections on an upcoming Norio Matsumoto would show in Asuka’s first appearance.

Every animation director has different approaches with their corrections and Honda was honestly subtle. Comparatively to other supervisors in the show, Honda’s character designs would tend to space eyes apart and you can see it in his own KA on character acting scenes and illustrations.

Towards the end of the show he would lighten up on this and start drawing the eyes bigger.

End Of Evangelion Honda would handle a majority of the Asuka vs Mass Produced Evas. With Honda supervising, the sequence would be insanely memorable thanks to the coordination of animators like Mitsuo Iso, Yoh Yoshinari, Mahiro Maeda, Masahiro Ando, Yasushi Muraki, and Honda himself.

Between the Evangelion tv series ending and End of Evangelion Honda would work on Katsuhiro Otomo’s Memories. Participating in the movie helped Honda solidify a solid relationship with more Production IG adjacents like Hiroyuki Okiura and Toshiyuki Inoue. Honda would appear to fully embrace realistic animation, and look barely dissimilar to Okiura or Inoue’s scenes. After the original Evangelion series officially ended, Perfect Blue would be the start of many collabs with Satoshi Kon. Kon’s storyboards in the scene of Mima chasing her double through a hallway would be handled by Honda, and he added things “that was missing at certain points”.

In 1998, Gainax animator Mahiro Maeda would direct Blue Submarine No. 6. One of the earliest digitally animated anime series, the OVA would span 4 episodes from 1998 to 2000. Honda would be series character designer, and AD on Episode 3. His key animation is super realized in the cuts he animated portraying a sense of dread and fear in his character acting. The next year on Jin Roh, Honda would venture into Hiroyuki Okiura’s opus. Surprisingly joined by Gainax co-workers Yoh Yoshinari and Tadashi Hiramatsu, the two embarked on a journey into the dark murky depths of realism.

After a brief stint on Hajime No Ippo and FLCL, Honda would up his journey on paper, and do designs with Satoshi Kon on Millennium Actress.

Honda noted he had trouble drawing the geishas in the movie.

That one part of the ending ruined one of my favorite characters lol so i get it, but in the entire scope of the anime for me it wasnt a dealbreaker, especially since the final episodes besides that awful part were amazing. I also liked the island part of the story, despite the funny history behind the production of that portion of the show, but i do feel that it went on too long, especially when they got back with grandis gang. I feel that Nadia was a preview of the themes anno would illustrate in more profound detail with eva, but nonetheless had a lot of maturity (again, besides that awful epilogue) and that feeling of wondrous adventure thorought the entire show is still hard to match imo

Opened up MAL again to try fantasy anime league for the first time. This team looks OK I guess? Gundam might doom me here because I might be overestimating how much discussion it will get.
