OH S***. Summertime Rendering is 25 episodes? F*** it I'm putting it back on the OP
Birdie Wing was some mid tbh, people were talking about it like it was some gem of the season
Bandai be like "Hey, we have these two interesting characters with great chemistry - lets abandon one of them for like 75% of the show and instead focus on a mid mafia subplot and introduce a bunch of one dimensional characters whose only function is to slow down the only two good characters from interacting again."
Anime Expo like a 15 min walk from me and I’m just finding out it’s happening today when it’s all sold out Wtf.

The appeal of Birdie Wing is in it's campiness. People loved its absurdity and seeing how it could one-up its craziness week after week. This is the equivalent of complaining about how a slice of life anime doesn't have a antagonist, it was the never the point of the show in the first place.

Calling something "camp" is a cheap excuse imo and doesn't invalidate criticism. Almost every single character was just a plot device that had no real purpose. The cast could've been cut by like 60% and the story would be the exact same.
Also as far as absurdity goes, it's pretty much just Eve saying "blue bullet" and hitting the ball real far. It's not like it's some insane over the top anime s*** that's never been seen before, it's actually really mild. So idk how the "absurdity" was the driving force of the show unless that's coming from people who have only watched slice of life and rom coms, in which case their opinion of absurdity should be taken with a grain of salt.
If it was attempting to be an over the top, absurd, sports anime then it failed at that cause it's relatively mild and the tension in matches was basically non existent.
If it was attempting to be a cute, character driven story about golf then it also failed at that cause the only two characters of interest are kept away from each other and are surrounded by empty cardboard cut outs that receive zero character progression or growth.
Being camp doesn't mean these very obvious problems are no longer problems. It's just up to you how much these problems hurt your enjoyment of the show and to me, they did a lot, if they didn't for you or others, that's fine.

I wanna know what sports anime you're watching if you don't count someones arm exploding and getting killed after losing a golf game doesn't count as absurd in the context of sports anime.

Absurdity is not just when something unexpected happens. It would be absurd if Rose never had a prosthetic and always played one handed or if she chose to handicap herself by amputating her hand to make golf more challenging for her. Instead what we get is a poor attempt at adding depth to lifeless character like an episode before they die. Her being killed for losing a mafia backed golf game is ironically the most realistic part of the show since mafias all around the world have had their hand in sports and offed people who didn't make them money.

A good "camp" sports anime is sk8-hi to infinity because the characters at least have cute and fun interactions with each other as a main cast. Plus, it does have the absurd s*** to make it weird on top of it lol
