He’s done some commissioned work such as Persona 5 in 2016 with Tetsuya Nishio and Satoru Utsunomiya
Arai 0:53-0:59
The next year in 2017 he reunited with many of the Akira sakuga legends on Blade Runner 2022 Black Out directed by Shinichiro Watanabe.
Arai 10:29-10:51
Four years, later Arai worked on what I would consider his biggest goof up ever on Evangelion Thrice Upon a Time where he was an animation director
So Arai was let on to the project serving as the primary animation director beacause Takeshi Honda was working on Miyazaki’s How Do You Live. Once Arai was finished correcting a good chunk of the movie, along with Masayoshi Tanaka there was a massive retake on corrections on top of the KA. Idolmaster and Darling in the Franxx director Atsushi Nishigori was brought in to make many secondary and even tertiary corrections on top of Arai and Tanaka’s work, being more in line with Honda’s work and fitting the story better.
This is one of the examples where it is extremely noticeable
This could potentially be Arai’s initial correction with then Tanaka redoing it, then Goripon finally realizing it at the end.
So that’s Kouichi Arai. A bit of an enigmatic vip in anime similarly to others like Ei Inoue just being top requested animators, but not exactly having an identifiable KA presence to be noticeable or popular. He’s definitely one of the most subtle animators to be brought on projects, but I believe it’s the adaptability of his work that has made him such a prolific figure. He can seemingly work with any design, and bring a lot out of his drawings even being more limited than Toshiyuki Inoue. Arai is probably the best preeminent mysterious animation goat.
1998 saw him working on some bigger animes, the first one being Serial Experiments Lain where he animated a section of the opening

I should watch the Blade Runner shorts
random thoughts of anime ive watched this year
Season 2 of Vinland Saga started out very slow but eventually became my favorite anime alongside chainsaw man and attack on titan right now. Probably the best anime out right now in terms of character development
Demon Slayer was beautifully animated but it feels like the story didn't really progress until the very end.
Black Clover movie was very entertaining. I miss it
Hell's Paradise/Jigokuraku is superrrr MID. The characters aren't likeable and the pacing is too fast for me to even gaf about them. The animation is kinda okay. I dropped the anime after episode 8
I also lowkey dropped HP but want to finish just to finish. prob will happen this week
@Eleganza just finished ID Invaded gotta say thanks for the rec cuz i highly enjoyed this one.
glad the plot ended up getting way more complex after the first 5 or so episodes, i loved the random twists and turns it took otw to a pretty unpredictable conclusion. 7/10 for me
gunna try to find somewhere to watch Flip Flappers now
there’s only 1 post on the last page for me hate when that one dude posts a million GIFs in a row, like make your own thread or something

Nah let him cook. It's great content to read in a thread of rent a girlfriend and shonen takes
Zom 100 could be anime of the season and that’s a wild statement in itself
Bleach here though. ZOM 100 is easily a top 3 though with action anime
