Yeah he can switch after Greed Island to 2011. The Hunter Exam arc is so boring in the 2011 adaption, i never made it through it. They had a morning time slot until around Chimera Ant and it shows. The 2011 Anime is only so popular in the west because its their introduction to HxH.
