Months later Obari for the first time in about 30 years directed a King of Fighters animation short for the new King of Fighters: XV game featuring Kabeshima, Takaya, and newer and older friends alike.
Obari animated the shot of Terry
Its a nice look at what a potentially new Fatal Fury anime could look like.
Obari the same year from 2022-23 took on another Tomino original, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury
Reunited with Teraoka, Ebikawa, and Gyobu. This alternative look into the Gundam franchise was able to briefly highlight Obariโs art in great and prettier detail. Thanks to better compositing reflecting the formed shadow on the armor of the Gundams, Obari and other animators mecha art was able to look better than ever.
This can likely be thanked by DP Shouta Kodera who had previously worked on the Sword Art Online with Kentaro Waki, one of the top DPโs in the anime industry.
For Obari this is noticeable in OP2

After working on a Gundam Build ONA, Obari got signed on to Cygames to work on his first new series in years, and first Bang series since the 90s, Bang Brave Bang Bravern
Probably my one of my favorite shows of this season (Winter 2024), Obari goes to show how much of a veteran he is on this show and flexes hard with this comedic bordering on parody mech show. If you have long indulged in the history of mecha animation, and love over the top humor paired with slick Obari action. When an alien threat invades earth, targeting major cities and naval bases, Bravern is magically summoned, but needs a pilot to which he chooses Isami, a Japanese soldier who we has a bit of a strong attraction to? While this show might seem a bit out of the ordinary for Obari, being one of his first shows to commit to cgi mechs, the character and personality of his style reigns supreme in every way. Not only just the still shots of Bravern doing classical Obari poses, and the big machoism typical of his male characters, but the VA performances are all very humanistic and quirky centered around fun gags that mostly mecha fans would understand. This show was sadly not advertised very well with everyone writing it off as another dullard mecha series. If you watch expect a fun romp, with nice breaths of character development. Think of this as a super robot show paired with a grounded mecha.
On character designs, Kouichi Motomura, a well known A-1 Pictures gave a Obari a nice contrast. Male characters in this show are overtly Top Gun macho, not opting for a usual bishounen look Motomura probably would have approached this with if it was any other director. Female characters conversely are typically bishoujo
This gives leeway to the absurd design of Bravern who has a mouth.
Bravern in motion is very fun, with the CGI artists adapting well to Obariโs boards. It's a fun, not too serious show that I highly recommend if you are into mecha genre jokes
So that is Masami Obari. One of the most iconic animators in the field of mecha, I donโt even know what to say. From his storied early career as a prodigy, to blossoming as a director he has been one of the most prominent and charismatic voices in the industry. All aspects from his visualization of framing to the modes in which he adjusts it into storytelling in his own shows work in perfect harmony. He has inspired so many people in the industry, and has an entire school of Obari animators that are just suited to work with him. For someone who had no prior knowledge of anime when going into it, becoming a icon of super robot anime is quite the turn.

what anime is this?
Bokutachi ga Yarimashita
No anime just manga and a live action apparently
Mecha are such a fun genre because they kinda live in a realm of their own.
Story wise I think half of it is similar to AoT and then the other half turns around into over the top soap opera mech battle action.
Now Im not a mecha expert but what always gets me is how the terrible ending is almost as much a trademark of the genre as the mechs themselves.
Its like the serial makers know that their story wont be continued because instead they will just make a different mecha anime so they decide to just prematurely end it after the planned runtime
In other words just watch Eureka seven
Goated yuri. Also love how it cinematic it can get. Those panels are quite something
Reminds me that I should check out the side story
Yeah I watched the show and then read the manga. Crazy how it never got a season 2.
finished record of lodoss war the other night and it was a pretty cool watch
big fan of the character designs on here & cel animation is always a pleasure to look at. i do wish some characters got fleshed out a bit, deedlit is seemly the fan favorite on here but she felt a bit mary sue-ish to me (maybe a bigger episode count could've helped add more character details but idk). good show nonetheless
Insane layouts from the Tis Time for Torture episode yesterday
