ok i might have hyped myself too much by putting tortured princess at 9/10 because that precure ep just reminded me the standard of actual 9/10 anime

oh yeah for sure. That 3d budget was crazy
finally finished kare kano today. i started this s*** in november but kept getting distracted with other things but i made an effort to finish it before the next season starts
i really liked this. i got some very strong scum's wish vibes from it but it's not anywhere nearly as sexual. the similarities were mainly on the melodramatic and introspective side of things. a lot of the main cast had episodes where they looked inwards and tried to understand why they are the way they are and i always enjoy that sort of writing. miyazawa and arima were so cute together and i enjoyed seeing how they dealt with their feelings for each other and how that changed as their relationship grew. pretty much the entire cast was funny too and i didn't ever feel like there was an annoying character either which is pretty rare imo
the animation throughout 99% of it was great too, it was so playful and dynamic. one moment miyazawa is just walking around the school totally normal and the next she's a demon chasing down another student or a giant crushing buildings beneath her, crazy. the variation of the animation made both the comedic and emotional scenes so much more impactful. oh and the music was awesome too. that lil piece on the keys during the emotional scenes always hit hard and the theme whenever miyazawa's family was part of the scene was great
the two problems i had were the way some characters were handled and the ending. not gonna spoil anything but one character has an arc that's a few episodes long and then they're basically dropped and just used as a gag character for the rest of the show. it felt really odd to put that effort into exploring them only to then reduce them to a gag character with basically no dialog. i didn't mind the final episode being basically a slideshow but the ending itself just felt like a weird place to cut the story. the anime doesn't fully cover the manga so i wasn't expecting a total story conclusion but this basically felt like it ended in the middle of an episode, not a series or season ending. it didn't ruin anything for me but it was definitely disappointing. apparently there were some kind of budgeting or production planning issues towards the end so that probably explains why it fell apart on the very last episode
8/10

Bravern I thought was pretty fun
As a dumb mecha show it does things right, speedrunning every possible Obari, tokusatsu, and magical mecha trope ever. I think it’s creativity and humor worked very well for the most part due to the main VA cast having fun, and well timed execution of jokes. Stuff like Bravern building his own model kits in the background, and them actually being a part of his transformations is only s*** you would find Obari doing.
The show’s production was good, with the first half of 10 being some sensational in house composition. The main cast was entertaining, but side characters were one dimensional and just there to cheerlead the MCs. Probably would’ve been fleshed out in a two cour but that would be stretching things thin.
Ending while I thought the ending was fine, I was hoping for something more original than humanity saves the day, but what was I expecting? tbh. Some introspection, like from 9, or 10 would’ve been nice to supplement the payoff
7/10, closer to a 6.5 but decibels f***ed my ratings
