I honestly rarely read comments in here and think 99% of anime is hot garbage, but I'm really curious to why people here think dungeon meshi mid
I think Dungeon Meshi fans are partly responsible for that as they hyped it up as the second coming of Frieren so people had the highest of expectations.
It didn't live up to that, so people were dissapointed
Me personally I don't like any of the main characters, it's too repetitive at times and I find it questionable how the plot is about saving their friend but they seem to have all the time in the world and are in no rush
i enjoyed dungeon meshi

And yeah you just gonna ignore the entire part about marcille breaking down because they are in fact half assing saving her friend because death not being permanent is unnatural
And Im not seeing any disappointment outside of this thread either
Called it that the people here that hate on shounen but love frieren cant sit through a real slow burner when not every episode ends in a madhouse sakuga fest.
Not enough fetishization going on either in dungeon meshi I guess
Dandadan is not going to be the next big thing. It’s fun and a solid read but just like Chainsawman doing crazy s*** just for the sake of it can only be entertaining for so long. The plot and characters are paper thin.
The truth is there is no new Shonen out right now worth hyping. But no one wants to accept that ofc

Dungeon Meshi is way above Frieren imo. I have only seen the first two episodes of the Dungeon Meshi Anime but I can see that anyone that only watches the Anime of both would prefer Frieren over it.
The Frieren Anime improved the source material. I dropped the Frieren Manga somewhere in the Exam arc because it was boring but the Anime made me enjoy it. And the same way I dropped the Dungeon Meshi Anime because it was just too normal and i'd rather just read those chapters again than watch the Anime.

Yeah Frieren is a very appealing show with a very appealing premise. We all love OP protagonists that lack emotions but rediscover them while always being underestimated by everybody around them. So they can kick ass and proof everybody else wrong little did they know they were dealing with the strongest character. Mob psycho and One Punch man also one of my personal favs because of that nice premise.
I think dungeon meshi is appealing too for many but not quite as broadly since it has the entire thing it sets up with the cooking and with its worldbuilding. The action is more comedic and less badassery. No OP protagonists barely any fighting between characters. It also doesnt flow as nicely into an adaptation since reading goes quick having a bit of an infodump on a manga page goes by in no time but it might take 5 minutes of an episode
Saying all of this I only see positivity about dungeon meshi on socials. Might be my bubble maybe but the mal score also went up alot and getting a season 2 on netflix on the day of the last episode is also a great sign.
If it is a double course it will cover the entire manga and then imo alot of still doubters will be silenced

Yeah the series is for the first 4 volumes basically an episodic cooking Manga. I enjoyed that but I can see why anyone getting new into it would expect more out of it. But i guess if you didn’t like the characters, their interactions and the world in those early episodes, I don’t think you will somehow enjoy it later on.

Meme.
I'm not the target audience since I don't enjoy cooking as a hobby, so it's disjointed for me to see an epic adventure be cut with a segment on cooking every episode
I think the Dungeon Meshi anime does things right (voice acting, animation, food scenes all on point) but I feel like it might have come out at a bad time given the expectation of it being “the next Frieren” is raising the bar substantially high. I see the manga as just a fun, and basic adventure story that doesn’t take itself too seriously until the end.
While I do think the show could’ve benefited from a higher production value, I think it’s general issue lied with pacing things out and that had more to do with execution than anything.
Here is one example where I realized pacing was very key for this adaptation, and they messed up. Spoilers for Episode 20
So there is a chapter where the gang go to this open cavern area with strange plant fauna. The lead Laios goes to fight some wolves that corner them and their new friend Itsuzumi books it to find another way out of the cavern
In the manga there is a scene where they’re at the top of the cliffs and the team mage Marcille falls down and loses her staff, unable to go support Itsuzumi in a meaningful way
In the show it just randomly cuts to her at the bottom of the cliff saying “where’s my staff?” completely removing the context of how she lost it in the first place. That’s pretty bad and this issue stemmed from poor episode direction, time consolidation, rather than literally any other thing. This happens a few times.

no one hyped it up like that and even if that was the case dungeon meshi is better than frieren lmao

rarely do i agree with your takes (in regards to jjk at least) but this is spot on lmao

man you dont have to be into cooking to like the show
the cooking part is just a creative way for the group to survive throughout the dungeon since they literally don't have enough money for food in general. it coincides with the different types/species of monsters they have no choice but to eat and its also shows off how cool the worldbuilding in the dungeon is
they also arent even as long as the thread likes to exaggerate it, especially in the manga.

I said meme as in "the show is bad lulz" on my end. I think it's fine, but I've said before I can't stand Laos as well. Reading what you said probably means the manga is the better medium for this show

You just did exactly what I meant
If you say it's better than the highest rated anime across all boards then it's gonna raise the expectations, what do yall expect

I thought this s*** was going to be better than 7th prince

dungeon meshi fans hyped up the anime because its a great series that we've wanted an anime for a long time + we knew an adaptation would help gain new fans into the series (which it did)
not even sure why frieren is even being compared to it besides mal / anilist rating which is just hilarious to even bring up as if thats the end all be all of determining a good show

fair enough
but yea i would say the manga is the best way to experience it (goes for most series) but the anime is just as good honestly
i didn't approach dungeon meshi with the idea that it was similar to frieren and i didn't even know others did. my problem with dungeon meshi was that i never grew to care for any of the characters and ultimately that makes the already pretty simple plot (rescue mission) even less engaging. imo manga readers hyped tf out of how amazing all the characters were and if that doesn't hit for you then there's not a lot else to look forward to. the cooking segments lost their luster pretty quickly. the humor is so closely tied to the characters that if you aren't connected to the characters the humor won't land. the animation is pretty average most of the time but does have energetic moments. the lore of the dungeon is interesting but it arrives at a point where i feel like most people have already made up their minds and so it's probably not enough to change anyone's feelings.
so at the end of the day i was left with characters i felt indifferent to going on a rescue mission where there doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency and occasionally cooking a meal
