Yeah jjk is very inspired by Bleach. But I think down the line they both become something very different.

I said i wanted to start reviewing anime ive watched, and it so happens that i just finished sonny boy yesterday, after putting it off for 3 years for many reasons. Better late than never, as it has easily entered in my favorite anime of all time.
I approached the anime with only the prior knowledge of the kazuo umezz manga "drifting classroom" and of course the "lord of the flies" influence in the main story elements, and that the producer of one punch man was directing and writing this anime for madhouse.
But, while the umezz and golding works surely served as founding pillars for sonny boy, from the first episode natsume shingo pulls away from those stories' main themes and subjects, focusing more on the psychology of our characters and their journey through adolescence and adult life. He still finds ways to show and criticize the different forms human society can take (there are portrayals of democracy, dictatorship, capitalism and organized religione) and of course there are the superpowers and the school, alongside its students, drifting away from reality, but all of this in service of showing the flaws, the growth and the road to adulthood of these characters in these ironically stagnant and static worlds. There are many mysteries to unfold, cryptic visuals and metaphors to decipher, but even if by the end of this show not everything gets a resolution, there's enough for the spectator to speculate on, and even then i'd argue its not really the point, the author himself agrees.
To him, the mechanics behind the this worlds, the powers themselves, the cause and effects and even some mysterious characters exemplify the unknown that we face in our everyday lives, and the struggle to understand our own world and its inner workings. This works because we always know as much as the characters, there's no narrator or omniscient explanation to anything, and we're left as confused as them.
I do have some qualms with the story presentation though, as i feel like a couple seemingly very important characters could've gotten a little more explanation, and while i understood the overall meaning, i found the infamous ep 4 to be tonally too different from the rest of the series and an unfortunate black sheep.
But what truly got me to love this anime were the characters and presentation. A huge praise i can give this anime is that in 12 episodes you get a handful of complete, realistic and compelling character arcs, with the main trio of nagara, mizuho and nozomi being my favorite. Seriously their dynamics are so good, i especially love mizuho and nagara's and how it evolves throughout. I also love asakaze, yamabiko and hoshi (although id loved to see more of him). With nagara the protagonist especially, while the shinji comparisons are not necessarily wrong, i find him to be a somewhat more grounded and crude depiction of depression, solitude, anxiety and confusion. Hes the perfect embodiment of what the show wants to teach its watchers.
I do feel that some characters could've been explored more (cap and aki sensei come to mind for example) but overall everyone played their part accordingly and i still dont find that many characters underutilized.
While the plot may seem impossible to fully grasp (i myself have not found an interpretation for everything), the overall message is quite simple and delivered wonderfully through not only all the above, but also the incredible art direction, animation and the minimal but cleverly placed and very emotional, nostalgic ost (huge highlight personally). I loved the flat coloring, it gave the anime a surreal and somewhat dreamlike aesthetic, with so many all timer wallpaper quality shots. The animation was top notch when it needed to be, with some sequences still playing in my mind, like the underwater nozomi and nagara scene, or the famous escape scene. The sound design was minimalistic, there's a lot of silence, which surprised me as we all know its unusual for an anime, and the ost is one id consider listening to casually, which doesnt happen much at all.
Some closing words on the finale, i simply loved It. I loved the courage it look to subvert expectations in such a brutal way, i loved the final message and closing lines, more optimistic than how others interpreted it imo, i loved that final scene with that smile, the parallels with how this story began, i know its very polarizing but to me its one of the bravest and most poignant endings ive seen in a while.
Finally, i feel like ive connected emotionally to this anime too much, as i can hardly be critical of it. It hit me at the right time in my life, to the point im glad i waited to watch it. I guess the dice God rolled worked for me this time. Episodes 6, 8, 10 and 12 especially made me cry a lot and i connected to the main characters so much, i honestly doubt there's anyone who's watched this who hasnt found themselves in any of their situation before. The message of the story is one that resonates a lot with me and i cant rule out that its changed my outlook on life.
Maybe i'll watch something like chobits now
