Maid Sama - 5/10
More like mid sama haha.
Anyway, finally done watching this anime. I'm in my exams period and I always watch lighthearted anime during that time. I thought this would be the one because I like romcoms, shoujos and tsunderes. However I have a long rant about it instead.
This anime features Misaki, head of the student council and a strict, hardworking and serious girl, and Usui, the hottest boy in class who finds out she secretly works at a maid cafe.
This is not a bad idea but in my opinion this anime has two major flaws that hold it back:
1. It's more comedy based than romance based
2. Usui is an insufferable douchebag
I'll talk about the latter first. Usui is basically a perfect guy. He's handsome, wanted by every girl but interested only in Misaki, he's pretty popular in the school (despite having no friends), he's skilled in everything from cooking to fighting to sports, and he's always around to save Misaki when she's in trouble.
At the same time this perfect guy has nothing better to do except stalk and bother Misaki everywhere she goes, and touch her inappropriately. And also he has no friends, job, hobbies, or any personality except being this perfect prince guy.
Now I understand that's pretty much the fanfic fantasy. Maybe girls do want a Ken doll who is very hot and perfect and also is around them and flirts with them all the time. Or maybe it's supposed to be entertaining because Misaki is tsundere and is obviously actually in love with him. But that still makes him unlikable, especially when there's no character development or depth and he just stays like this the entire anime.
Misaki is actually likable and easy to root for. She's hardworking and reliable, always working hard towards a goal and helping other people. You want her to win, but understand the lesson she has to learn: You can't do everything on your own. This is a good message for the character, however that brings us to the first point.
Because this anime is more comedy than romance, most episodes are episodic and have no plot progression. It's so formulaic it feels like a fever dream. Basically Misaki gets into a silly situation, she tries to do something and gets in trouble, and there comes Usui to save her. This is most episodes. From this she's supposed to learn she can trust other people. However by the next episode she forgets about it and it all resets.
An episodic format could work with an anime that's funny and has a strong cast. This anime is none of those. Most of the rest of the cast are just boring one dimensional characters with the same joke. You hear and see these jokes all the time you can almost predict the entire episode in your head after watching a few. Funny is subjective but I didn't think it was funny enough to justify being a comedy first.
There's another character I could mention who is Hinata. He appears in the last 5 episodes as a romantic rival for Usui, and he is easily the most likable and developed character in the anime. I think if this love triangle plot happened earlier and they skipped a lot of the filler leading up to it, it would've been a significantly better anime. However at this point I was so tired of the jokes and writing I just wanted to finish the anime.
While the last episode was cute, I needed more romance in the anime. Even if it's with Usui, I feel like these characters are kind of an obvious match, and they can actually be happy together, if they spent more time on that then it would be interesting. Instead it felt more like an idea of what a romcom is without any of the emotion.
How good is haikyuu
