Cause he's a kid, he's suddenly given by grown adults the biggest responsibility on Earth. Add to that the fact he's mentally ill, it's not easy to tackle rationally that task. All the adults in the series also thought of themselves first cause every single character we're being presented are incapable of any social interaction, thus making for them impossibile to understand how others are feeling

I get what you're saying but in the scenes where the headquarters get invaded and they start killing everyone inside, If he just got into the eva so many lives would be saved. But yeah, he had to be the way he was for things to turn out like they did. Still one of my fav animes oat

In the condition he was in he felt he was useless and piloting the Eva wouldn't have done any good since he gives the Eva a bad connotation, not only for what it did to his life but also for how many lives it ended. That's what depression does to you
