Yeah, if you compare monogatari with say demon slayer then of course the latter would be better animated than monogatari, but these two shows are so different that comparing them in any way would be stupid. Compare monogatari to other slice of lives and you can really see how good its animation is. There's only so much you can do animation wise when two characters are talking to eachother for a long period of time

When I see anime, I want to see characters and backgrounds move. In Monogatari (most likely an artistic decision) everything is completely still. Characters stand still in awkward camera positions while dialoguing, the backgrounds are often white and empty. Only in certain scenes there’s actual animation and movement.

It's an isekai about a guy that can rewind time everytime he dies but has to deal with all the pain of losing everyone he loves, watching his attempts at a better life fail everytime and ofc the pain of dying multiple times.

It's not the typical ''life in another world where the mc powers up and beats monster''

Instead, the main character of rezero is neither a brave fighter nor a p****. He's just a normal guy that knows when to fight and when to give up(there's literaly a scene where he kills himself to avoid tragedy).

The cast of supporting characters is great too with interesting developments that makes you invest in 'em.

The ''villains'' in the first few episodes are normal ''villains'' like serial killers, gangs of thieves etc and as the story develops you get cults and even mythical creatures but the main antagonist of the series is like a lurking shadow which I hope the new season will expand on.

tldr: re:Zero is a great show to watch, go watch it now

One of the worst MC in anime.

Slice of life I do like, either has good animation, different locations and backgrounds characters go to, different clothes, or at least funny or relatable characters and situations that are fun to watch. Monogatari has none of these.

I agree with you on Shaft/Shinbo making the long dialogue in Monogatari so visually appealing, but I'm gonna have to disagree with them not having much to work with just because it's not an action packed show. I feel scenes like this (https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/110599) show that Shaft could have done great animation with the conversation scenes if they wanted to. They might just not have wanted to because that may have clashed with the chosen direction of quick cuts, shots of the scenery, etc., which I can respect, but I can't say their animation is great just because they chose not to have animation. If a show was 24 minutes of nothing but a black screen, I wouldn't the show credit if their goal was to be nothing but a black screen.

I also think its perfectly possible for have great animation in a non-action series. Yesterday wo Utatte from this season is a perfect example of that.

For 3gatsu, like you said, the animation in scenes showcasing a characters inner thoughts are great but I just think they're too few and far between for me personally.

I think our views on animation quality might be a little too different to agree with each other but it's been a good convo and I can see your point of view

    Agree to disagree then

I disagree, i don't remember any scene where the characters stand still in empty backgrounds, so if you can show examples of such instances then i'll take everything back. If the characters stand still its mostly for 10 seconds or so and it never becomes bothering, at least to me. You may not like the stylistic choices they made to keep things engaging (I see you found the camera positions awkward, i found them mostly brilliant), but that's personal taste

I guess the series wasn't for you then, everything you mentioned in your post imo is present in the show and are actually highlights to me. Animation was great, backgrounds were always different, some even unrealistic, which only adds to making things interesting, the changes in looks is really frequent, senjougahara changes at least 5 times her looks in the series. F***, every character has different outfits and hairstyle to show progression in their character arcs and in general to showcase their state of mind. Comedy is subjective so i give you that, its not a show for everyone. Lastly, some of these characters are not relatable (shinobu and senjougahara are some notable examples), but these characters are caricatures of the anime tropes and thus a critique of these tropes, which are in no way real or relatable (although there are some relatable characters like Kaiki and Hanekawa). If you like relatable characters in a story then i understand why you feel that way, it's opinions at the end of the day

The girls look similar when she changed her hair I thought she was a different character

Every time they sexualize a 9 year old girl in this it just feels uncomfortable

    What is it?

Its an anime about rakugo (japanese storytelling) and in particular about a friendship/rivalry between two men who are so different from eachother but are able to lift eachother up because of these differences. Don't be put off by the fact its based around rakugo because it only serves to push the plot forwards, while the anime is more focused on themes of rivalry, life and death, art and devotion, tradition and innovation (although some of the stories are beautiful and carry a deep meaning tied to the characters and the series' main themes)
