yeah it was uhhhh.............. awful. The ending was bad, the new characters (you get some new first years) were utilized awfully, and Shiina/Sorata both end up sucking by the end.

yup Liz is an amazing movie and I would recommend A Silent Voice if you really liked that. Same director.

Spent the last month working through Haruhi Suzumiya in broadcast order and, tonight, all 3 hours of Disappearance.

Spoilers, sort of, though I think most people who read this and haven't seen the show won't be able to get much out of my post one way or the other.

I didn't love the show, but I did like it for the most part. The episode where they show the movie is one of the f***ing funniest things I've ever watched and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya arc is fantastic. The less significant episodes showed some cracks...I got really annoyed with Haruhi, specifically the way she was constantly molesting Mikuru. At first I really liked Mikuru's character, but she was so broken by the end of season 2 that she was barely functional. Actually really sad to watch and I'm not sure if that was the intention. Never really decided how I felt about Kyon. Koizumi and Nagato are goated.

Season 2 was frustrating not because of Endless Eight but because it didn't further the narrative significantly if watched in broadcast order. A lot of it felt like filler. In fact, Endless Eight was actually the most significant element of the whole season besides the time travel opener (which I loved). Endless Eight's first couple episodes are actually fantastic, though it does get dull over multiple repetitions and I wasn't thrilled with how it wrapped up. Like...it was fine, but I was expecting more after 8 episodes of the same content.

As someone who got some enjoyment out of the show but only loved it on occasion, I loved Disappearance despite some flaws. It doesn't shake up the status quo the way I hoped it would, the pacing is VERY languid, the score (besides Satie) is distracting in a way that calls attention to this being a movie and not the series proper, and most of the narrative progression is shoved into the final third, to its detriment.

But, when you get right down to it, it has everything I liked about the show and very little of what I didn't. The tone is stark and beautiful. I greatly enjoyed the character development of Kyon and Nagato; their meeting over tea at her apartment absolutely ached. So much of the film was emotive in a way that didn't feel forced; the contrast between Kyon's lives was so sharply illustrated through visuals and atmosphere that I didn't second guess his sudden fondness for the life he constantly whined about. Haruhi was more tolerable here than usual.

Even if they had never seen a second of the show, I think a casual viewer would enjoy the film quite a bit. But if you've pored over the series, including the Endless Eight (which adds a ton of weight to Nagato's arc), the emotional tenor of the film shifts dramatically.

Overall, I'm glad I watched the show, and I would recommend it for Disappearance if nothing else, which is an objectively great anime film. There maybe 10-12 episodes of the series that are unmissable too if you love anime. The rest is generally fine but not Kyoto Animation's best work.

as someone that just finished haruhi a few weeks ago, i agree with you on almost everything here. the interesting thing is that it's easy to see why this show was such a hit in 2006, but time has sort of left it behind imo. haruhi is an unlikeable a****** in far more ways than one, which is probably intentional, but the molestation scenes that are everywhere have aged terribly and would not fly today. it just all ends up being over the top which makes it hard for me to feel any way when she does have her softer moments.

about kyon, while his sarcasm is funny a lot of times, ive also mentioned before that his negativity is too much to the point where it kinda sours the experience and it just doesnt feel grounded in reality. if i was a front row witness to nagato vs ryoko i would NOT be acting the way he is for the whole series.

u got dedication if u watched endless eight in its entirety though damn, i didnt even think twice about skipping everything except 1, 2, 8.

idk about korea but apparently bullying is a genuinely serious issue in Japan. Like suicide is at a record high there and the highest demographic come from high school women.

I still need to see the latest episode but

    1. This was written by Koreans and happens in Korea

    2. How the f*** can you bully someone for raising money for his cancer patient friend? Like it's like you saying "ooh look at this lame ass taking care of puppies" like WTF? That's unrealistic corny as f***

i think it was more of they were harassing him because he used to fight them often (with his friend pre-illness) but had stopped when he decided to enter GOH.

I'd compare it to a part in YYH when Kuwabara stopped fighting for a period of time or else his friend would lose his job supporting his family and his rivals would beat him up anyway

taking advantage of a situation for the short-sighted goal of humiliating a guy that would kick their asses i guess

Fiction isnt a good way to gauge/reflects real life but if there's some kind of representation and it take place in that particular society then likely creator is familiar of s***s happening, its all dramatised ofc
