DB is not everyone's daddy tho. It has a really big influence but it didn't even create 80% of the things people say it did. DB took a lot of its influences from Shonen before it

Toriyama took more from dr slump tbh, which ironically is his own thing, but even then dragon ball had a wider reach. The big 3 of the 80s definitely were Hokuto, dragon ball and kinnikuman tho. Dragon ball is on devilman/tetsuwan atom/ashita no joe level of influence

Hopefully kubo redeems himself to the fans with burn the witch or whatever he's gonna work on, shueisha finally giving him more artistic freedom

Dragonball started as a gag manga like Dr. Slump but the editor pushed it towards the martial arts fights because of how popular HnK and all the other battle manga were.

To this day, nobody can draw fights better than Toriyama

Ive read he made dragon ball cause he liked martial arts, his editor told him to try it and it worked for him. The way he approached it was way different from Hokuto no ken or kinnikuman too, goku was a kid who underwent training to get stronger plus the tenkaichi tournament were all new things toriyama introduced, among others

Yea, it was planned out as the Journey to the West story with gag and martial arts elements. Dragonball wasn't actually a big hit from the start. It was popular but nowhere near Dr. Slump. Most of the time it ranked around 7th place till the Piccolo arc. That's why they went further and further into action with each arc because thats what proved to be popular. Personally, i think Toriyamas original vision was a gag series with minor action elements but not what has became of it.
