As someone who found the first season to be pretty bleh and a desperate attempt to cash in with a western crowd, s2 was a massive improvement in nearly every way though its attempts to be multi cultural still feel try hard at points.

Still an 8/10 for me tho

Id say that season 1 more than trying too hard to cater to the west it felt a bit too inspired by ashita no joe as the similarities between the 2 were plenty, but it was supposed to be a tribute to anj for its 50th anniversary so it only made sense. Season 2 managed to be its own thing and while still paying its homages to the og here and there it tackles a different theme and it does so perfectly. The whole motif of the mockingbird was so great, especially thanks to chief who was outstanding despite not having a ton of screentime and of course joe. If season 1 was an 8, season 2 def surpassed expectations to me and gets a 9

My impression of Steins;Gate 0 is that it tried to restore the feeling of Steins;Gate, it's structured exactly like S;G but executed worse.

S;G has a slow paced first half transitioning into a fast paced, dramatic second half. The reason we needed this is for character building and world building, and having the tone shift from lighthearted and funny to dramatic and dark is effective. At this point we're already familiar with the characters and have a connection to them, and it's shocking to see them in such a dramatic situation, so we're now very invested into the plot.

S;G0 also has a slow paced first half, but this time it's gloomy and depressing instead of lighthearted, we already know most of the characters and the new characters aren't as exciting and interesting. It might've been because I watched it weekly, but usually in these episodes there isn't much plot going on, except for a cliffhanger in the last 3 minutes. So it's gloomy instead of funny, and there's also very little going on narratively and the characters who aren't Okabe or Maho had nothing to do.

When S;G0 got to its dramatic peak, it was more interesting but also felt more contrived than S;G. There's a fine line you can walk on with a time travel narrative. Obviously time travel isn't real and doesn't make sense but as long as it doesn't break the story's rules it's ok. S;G0 didn't break the story's rules but the final episodes felt very silly.

First of all, the cat girl and the transgender girl suddenly becoming powerful warriors when he goes into the war future was silly. The Kurisu lookalike that isn't Kurisu's daughter but just happens to look like her makes no sense other than to torture Okabe and confuse us. The blonde scientist villain reveal was predictable. Okabe's plan to repeat his actions 1000 times or something like that felt over the top. So he was discouraged from doing this kind of thing before but now it's ok?

I also see Steins;Gate's ending as a more complete, deserved ending. It didn't "need" Steins;Gate 0 and thematically it's just a detour. He ended up reaching the same conclusion in both stories, but this time he reached it slower.

What do I like about S;G0? I like the world and characters, but that was already created in S;G. Maho is a good new character. The AI plot was cute, I wish it had a better tie into the narrative but it was interesting, I liked it.

Edit: I forgot to say that the second half of S;G0 isn't as effective because you now expect it to get dramatic and dark. It also doesn't develop Okabe's character at all because you've seen him become serious and heroic before so it's not surprising when he does.

I think our disagreement stems from how we think about 0. From what I’ve gathered, you seem to think 0 should, ideally, complete Steins;Gate (after all whats the point, perhaps).

I view it as another route in the Visual Novel, almost as a completely different show (aside from having to connect the first half, where they diverge).

I think you make good points though and I see why you dislike it, I appreciate you taking the time to explain in depth!

(I do agree the future s*** u mentioned was dumb as hell tho)

Wow this special episode was awful. I don't care if they'll do another season, I'm really pissed.

First off the editing and script for this were very on the nose and obnoxious. I was like "huh??" the entire episode as they kept dumping exposition and information at me and very quickly became numb to everything going on.

It's cool that they confirmed that their friends are now back to life? Because it wasn't clear from the previous episode, I thought they were still dead but their spirits were freed or whatever.

You'd think by how the last episode played out, that this would be the episode that Ai fights the big bad, instead it was just Neiru bullshit and the conclusion is the same, that Ai will be fighting the big bad but this time for Neiru.

They spiraled it into a dumb sci fi plot and even made it more like the Evangelion ending (the series ending) because apparently that's how you can end a story without any resolution.

There's still no closure for Rika and Momoe which I knew they couldn't fix. Also bringing the girls back to life means that it's not about dealing with grief and survivors guilt because look they're back to life! So what did they learn, what is the character arc? It screams unfinished.

I think the entire Neiru plot is very stupid. Ironically, they should let this anime die.

I'm also pissed at how they told Koito's story. Ok she had an unexplained mental illness. The way they told it made it seem like it's her fault for committing suicide or whatever.

so does this mean i should or shouldnt watch WEP

At one point it was the highest rated anime on MAL. I had super high expectations when I saw it, it’s okay. My high expectations I’ll say kind of tainted the experience.

it had some pacing issues but other than that it's solid

it's weird cause it'd go from a snoozefest type of show to an edge-of-your-seat show in a heartbeat

Well I hope you didn't look at the spoilers.

It's probably the most interesting anime I've seen in a while. It has great characters with chemistry, purposeful cinematography and visual themes, and a good plot up until the last two or three episodes where it completely crumbles. It's like a big missed opportunity to tell a good story about suicide and survivor's guilt. All the pieces are there.

I guess I recommend it unless a bad ending is a deal breaker for you. Since it's such a short anime I don't think it's a big deal to watch it.

I don't know if you watched Soul Eater but I feel the same way about Soul Eater's ending yet I still recommend it. But it's different because Soul Eater is more about the journey.

I have a lot of problems with Erased. I think it's a bad mystery and should've focused on slice of life more because those were the best moments.

Thanks for reading my rant! There's a lot to say about Steins;Gate. I guess I did set myself up for disappointment because I knew the first season wrapped up nicely.

From a point of view of it's a different story or it's additional story it makes sense to like it. It does have the same characters, world, writing and art style and it doesn't get dumbed down. It stays true to its fans and what made it special.

I had to compare it in my mind to the first season, because I do think they are the same structurally and they convey a similar message. Maybe I would've liked it more if I binged it or if it was a shorter season.
