一 by itself supposedly sounds like いち

but the 一 in 一つ supposedly sounds like ひと right?

i guess coming from an english perspective i kinda assumed each character has generally the same sound and i would be able to sound out words if i recognized the characters, but pronunciation for 一 in those two situations is nowhere near each other at all and now im completely lost as to how people know when to use which pronunciation

also lemme know if these questions are getting tiring, ill go and use other resources

Context helps a lot. Also, 一つ(ひとつ) will always have つ tagged on at the end, and there's no other kanji/kana combination that could be confused with it.

but basically from what I've been told it's a lot more helpful to learn overall meanings of kanji first and readings later, when you're reading it's more important that you understand both 一つ and 一 mean "one" rather than knowing both readings for it
