He's one of my favorite artists of all time. His range and creativity got me excited about recording my own music. Something/Anything (comfortably in my top 50 albums ever) and A Wizard/A True star are invigorating as hell but he has plenty of other albums that are less playful but still stand strong on their songwriting alone.

For you or anyone who sees this thread and wants to dive in, these are his most essential albums:

    Something/Anything
    A Wizard/A True Star

If you like the weirder parts of those albums:

    Todd
    His Utopia stuff

If you like his more traditional songwriting:

Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren
    Hermit of Mink Hollow

I also really like his debut, it's like a weirder version of The Ballad of Todd Rundgren that kind of feels like a dry run for Something/Anything. Lot of great tracks on there but it lacks polish and consistency.

its really funny to me how Todd has this massive backlog of beautiful and profound songs and yet one of his biggest hits is f***ing this lol

  • A Philly legend. Anyone that’s a fan needs to listen to his interview on QuestLove supreme.

Appreciate it had all of these on my list except his debut and utopia

Not really but I met his son in Hawaii and ended up going to one of Rundgren’s mansions in hawaii

I remember I first heard this song in the film “the virgin suicides”

Been a fan ever since; one of the best songwriter/producers of his time

i saw him live a while back, he dressed up as a preacher. the sound was a little boomy but damn that band was 🔥

    my favorite TR

    Runt (1970)
Runt. The Ballad of Todd Rundgren (1971)
    Something/Anything? (1972)
    A Wizard, a True Star (1973)
    Todd (1974)
    Initiation (1975)
    Faithful (1976)
    Hermit of Mink Hollow (1978)
    Healing (1981)
The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect (1982)
    A Cappella (1985)
    Nearly Human (1989)
    2nd Wind (1991)
    No World Order (1993) (TR-I)
With a Twist... (1997) (remakes album)
    One Long Year (2000)
    Liars (2004)
    State (2013)

    Todd Rundgren's Utopia (1974)
Todd Rundgren’s Utopia Another Live (1975)
    Ra (1977)
    Oops! Wrong Planet (1977)
    Adventures in Utopia (1979)
    Deface the Music (1980)
    Swing to the Right (1982)

and this lindstrom collab lp is ill it’s a wild electronic record

id like to hear the donda sessions.

and for anyone who want to see why he’s a genius.

listen to something like nwo, faithful, invitation or hermit.

i’ve also been meaning to listen to tour shows. he’s one of those great tour recordings like bowie, prince, zappa

i hope travis can live up to the utopia name but something tells me it won’t happen.

this 90’s styled edm it all went up in smoooooooke the intro and how he builds it with the transitions. the edits he did on this s*** with these harmonies and that chorus. it’s all very easy listening but the thing is

    the outro

i’m one of these people who will fight people if you run to something anything and wizard and don’t understand or mention the brilliance of nearly human 😒

probably the one i don’t like the most is arena. i don’t remember the individualist lp, tbh

the one project no one really know x about - runddans - it is a trio electronic recording with 2 other greats in idm

is a sign of the future and what happens if someone who reaches out to Todd & takes his multitracks of guitars and vocal harmonies

ite so crazy how it unfolds 😳the bubbling wall of synths and slide 🛝 🎸 guitars vibraphones & the fact he just flies in these cavernous angelic harmonies. the goat was in his 60’s when he made that. they got one part where he’s in a vocal reverb echo with just his voice and then they bring back the synths and then it’s like a mushroom trip with todd

the lp is just one track that keeps spiraling together

    😭

if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, todd, prince, stevie, bowie all architects of idm because of their exploration with sound design & synths 😎
