Earlier this week, a snippet of a collaboration between Drake and Beyoncé hit the Internet, leading some to speculate that it was a leak from Drake’s forthcoming Views From The 6. Drizzy gets self-aware on the hazy, downtempo “Can I?,” bolstered by a minimal spoken-word hook from Yoncé. The minute-and-a-half clip doesn’t quite capture the majesty of the duo’s first collaboration “Mine,” but it shows definite promise. Unfortunately, we may never get to hear the finished version.
Last night, a full length but extremely sparse version of the track hit the Internet, with entire verses left empty, like some kind of deadfall trap for struggle rappers. Sure enough, roughly 6 seconds later, unknown vocalist Sal Houdini dropped a verse on it. Houdini fills in the gaps on the leak, giving the song a more complete feel. Houdini is competent on “Can I?”—he definitely has that signature moody-meets-melodic quality consistent with many of Drake’s OVO Sound cohorts. But ultimately, his contribution falls flat when stacked up against two of the most recognizable voices in music.
Users on Reddit and kanyetothe were quick to point out the similarities between this situation, and when Canadian struggle rapper E. Batt leaked one of Drake’s singles with his own verse on it last year. Despite having all the telltale signs of being another unauthorized remix rather than an official leak, some outlets drove traffic to Houdini’s bootleg version, mentioning him as a featured artist.
It’s a classic promotional ploy, taken directly from the Hustler’s Handbook. But was it intentional?
Apparently, Sal Houdini is as surprised as everyone else is to see his name associated on the same level as the greats. This incredulous Instagram post suggests that he never intended for his version to see the light of day: “If you find the link please report it. I didn't mean to do this it was just for fun.”
As Julianne Escobedo Shepherd of Jezebel’s The Muse eloquently pointed out earlier this morning, “if you send around a jam with two of the biggest pop artists in the world to ‘a few people’ ‘for fun,’ that s*** is gonna end up on the internet!” Even if you believe Sal’s sob story, the damage is already done. Chances are, The Boy & Beyoncé may never revisit the compromised track.
Without trying, Sal Houdini might have made “Can I?”—wait for it—disappear.
