Lemme preface, I'm talking about soundcloud underground rap, not backpack rap. Used to be some balance. I'm not sure if I'm tripping but in the early 2010s there was a fine line of the underground and popular.
Not complaining either, it's just an observation I've been thinking of lately, with Yeat and Lone becoming household names and the new biggest rappers today. It speaks volume, that wouldn't have happened before. I think Carti and Uzi opened the gates and some deceased artists like Peep and Juice whose death had people lay more eyes on the scenes they come from. I also see memes featuring rappers like Xaviersobased on raptok/yt with a bunch of views
go ask your mom who yeat and destroy lonely are rn
my mom wouldnt know but my siblings who are in their 30s or nearing would lol
i assure you the average 30 year old does not know who tf destroy lonely and yeat arre
you should immediately half your time that you spend on the phone. maybe make a fitness plan too if you feel ambitious.
Jay Z, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift. These are household names
Yeat and Destroy Lonely aren’t household names and neither are anyone else from earlier SC gens
is this partly just because most of the popular rappers of the early 2010s were bigger than the popular rappers of 2023?
Xaviersobased is next up frfr
I think ur right but we in the beginning stages of it still. Very exciting times
I watched a 9 year old play a sped up Yeat Tik Tok and then move on, having no clue who it is. These are Tik Tok metrics. Using that to say household name is absurd. Algorithm autoplay nonsense
This really isn’t a thing in the black community it’s all rap which is our number one genre so once ur big ur big
There’s little difference between drake and someone like lil Durk in the black community

literally, tiktok metrics mean nothing, dudes will get a mil followers on the tok from one viral video then the rest of their tiktoks will have like 2000 views

I dont disagree, but Yeat is white and majority of his fanbase is white

Perhaps, we still aint got no new big 3. I think it's cus how hip hop is evolving

Not really tbh.
If I had a dollar for every Black person in my city who said that overused "21....can you do something for meee" line in the past 5 months, I'd be rich.
Plenty of Black people f*** with Drake's music. Drake just also has a strong non-Black fanbase unlike Durk.
Idk man does anyone listen to Rahiem Supreme? I can get pretty underground
OP is talking about SoundCloud underground, not Bandcamp underground

Curated algorithms just give the illusion that things are bigger than they really are when in reality its just showing what people like you are watching/listening to

I remember arguing with someone who claimed that Andrew Tate is a household name on Reddit.
I told him that social media and his algorithms make Tate seem much bigger than he actually is.
