Moving there in 2 weeks
To the NW/nob hill area.
What do y’all like to do out there?
Also if you’re cool lmk we can link for a beer or something
Been here for 16 years lol, frankly though I don’t travel to the downtown area frequently since graduating from school
I live in Miami rn but I’m relocating out there
What area do you stay in? What’s it like etc

I live in the general SW Portland area (outside of the actually city) and it’s pretty chill tbh. Downtown area kinda fell off since the pandemic, but it’s still got some places to check out. Bunch of bars, clubs, etc. where it gets extremely lit on the weekends
One of the main spots imo is the Pittock Mansion, where it provides a nice view of the city. Japanese Garden is cool too though I haven’t been there in many years

Couple things to note to prepare yourself
It’s nice weather for the most part in the PNW right now, but we’re cold or cold and rainy a good 8 months out of the year. Say goodbye to Miami vibes.
Be careful when you’re pretty much anywhere in downtown. The homeless population has grown over the last couple of years and crime has raised significantly since the 2020 protests. You don’t need to be scared of your own shadow, but be street smart and cautious.
Oregon does have some positives though. Geographically, it’s one of the most diverse states in the US. There’s city, country, ocean, mountains, deserts etc.
It’s beautiful and there’s so many things to enjoy.
No annoying ass sales tax.

Was downtown nice before 2020?
I visited Seattle a few years back and loved it, has its sketchy areas like an major city but overall just an amazing city. So my wife and I decided we’d try out Portland this weekend and holy s*** it’s nothing like Seattle at all lmao. We were staying central downtown but we drove around quite a few places on the east and west side and it was just a ghost town compared to most major cities besides the massive homeless population. Also probably the dirtiest city I’ve ever been in. The Washington Park area outside the central city was nice and obvi the nature outside the city is amazing too. Very confused as to why I’ve heard people say they prefer it to Seattle after this visit though, unless there was a dramatic shift in the last 3 years.

I mean it wasn’t like a pristine beautiful place but it was definitely nicer compared to 2020. Portland went so hard during the 2020 protests that they basically deconstructed the police department in Portland. Crime is rampant and there’s no real substitution. I’m not for the Police but I’m also not for a place that allows for crime to run like it does now. I go to Portland for events and stay out of it otherwise. Not a place to spend time at casually.

Interesting thanks for the insight!
