I rewatched it a few months ago after being reminded of it by Uncut Gems (which is basically a more comedic and far less bleak version of it) and man...Harvey Keitel cemented his legacy with that performance. It absolutely s***s on Reqiuem for a Dream (and maybe Trainspotting but I haven't seen that) when it comes to depicting the life of a degenerate d*** addict.
Yeah it’s rly good. I’ve only seen that, Ms 45, and King of New York from Ferrara but KONY is so far my fav from him
Kietel is incredible in the role though. Probably the biggest reason why it’s worth watching
Great movie. Not related beyond same title and general plot details but bad lieutenant with nic cage is also amazing

Nigga, it's crazy, I never seen it, but I remember reading about it in high school, but never got around to watching it and i was JUST thinking about it

Nic Cage/Herzog version is like an entirely different film but Cage SPAZZED in that. So underrated.

Never seen. Uncut gems was directly influenced by Bad Lieutenant?

Indirectly. At least in my mind. Several others on Letterboxd seemed to feel the same way too. Both deal with degenerate addicts in NYC that risk it all on a sports championship

idk hard to really say it is influenced by Ferrara because Bad Lieutenant is very clearly influenced by films like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver which essentially put that NY crime style on the map in cinema and influenced pretty much everyone from De Palma to Ferrara
I think you can say Ferrara is an influence on the Safdies in that they drew from the same sense of low budget filmmaking in the NY scene, but I bet Scorsese was the biggest influence on Safdies as he was on Ferrara's NY run in the 90s.

I don’t think it was influenced by anything in particular, maybe British cinema tbh
I hated king of NY so I wrote off Abel Ferrara but thread making me want to give this one a shot
