They got rich thanks to the industrial revolution and there is no correlation with wealth now and colonies of the past.
Portugal had one of the biggest empires at the time and they invented the atlantic slave trade but now look where they are.
A few european countries are still rich thanks to neocolonialism though. If France lost its power over western africa it would become a third world country in an instant
You got it wrong. The Portuguese ceased to be a colonial power comparable to the British and the French by the turn of the 19th century. So that does not really hold.
As far as the industrial revolution is concerned, countries still relied on looted imports and labour from the colonies in order to sustain themselves in an economic transition where specialisation was underway. In fact, the industrial revolution was the kernel for the Scramble Over Africa and their European expansion in Asia. Before then, the colonisers had little impact in the colonies, but after then the Europeans started to grip harder. Why? Because the industrial revolution led to population growth, which entailed more demand for goods and that in itself led to more profit for the colonisers.
