When I look at historically iconic films; the ones where the moments, performances, characters and/or quotes are so deeply recognized in the greater cultural consciousness that it becomes osmosis to possess a passing knowledge of their existence, I can’t help but ask,
“Are a good number of these films adaptations of hugely popular ips with dedicated fanbases?”
I’m talking about that degree of recognizability of how the films’ play out on an A-B-C level (at minimum). That rare air of films such as Titanic, ET, Star Wars, Toy Story, Scream, The Exorcist, Jaws, Grease, you name it. I’m not; however, talking about the entire world merely acknowledging the existence of the high stakes final entry in an already popular franchise series for half a year at most.
The Dark Knight is the only one I can think of, and maybe The Wizard of Oz (“maybe” because I don’t know how huge the book series was before the film). And while I don’t want to pile on the MCU hate train and I do recognize The Avengers as the most game-changing blockbuster of the 2010s, I wouldn’t say any of their bigger films fit the bill either. Any entries?
Harry Potter sequels and Infinity War for sure. Thanos and Voldemort probably the top 3 most iconic villains this century.
A lot of movies even old ones you don’t expect are usually an adaptation of something like book or play
It’s irrelevant to thread cause you’re only talking about adapting from an IP with a large fan base but just wanted to share a recent fact I noticed
I never used to pay attention to the credits lol
