Because it would cause divorce to be less destructive. Instead of one relationship ending and the family being left broken up the man has more wives and more kids to supplement the family structure. I'd much rather marry two women at once so if the relationship ends with one, I still have another. Also having multiple families per man is better objectively for society.

But can a lot of men handle taking care of more than one woman? What about how it would effect the average man?

If a man can't handle multiple wives then he doesn't have to. It wouldn't change the current dynamics much considering there are lots of intertwining monogamous relationships. It would just be adding legality to it and commitment

We already had a thread where we discussed that in polygamous society the rich men always end up hoarding the wives which leaves a whole generation of young men with no hope for a family and no future and nothing to do but get into trouble.

You're assuming that they will all get along and be on the same wavelength. Polygamy, aside from being unsustainable in this economy, is one-sided in its structure and frustrations are bound to happen, so you've got an open relationship with more people than you realize.
