watched this last night and was very underwhelmed
seemed like Aster just threw a bunch of 2020 buzzwords on a whiteboard and crafted a story around it: lockdown, masks, vaccines, conspiracy theories, capitalism, corporate greed, white guilt, blm, and antifa
problem was the commentary was spread so thin between those topics that none of it was unique or thought provoking. The Curse did gentrification and white allies better and Bacurau did capitalism and corporate greed and the switch to violence better
as I saw somebody else say in this thread, I was just like "ok..." as the plot developed and for 2.5 hours it still didn't feel like any of the storylines were that captivating
his worst movie imo, and I actually liked Beau Is Afraid
Yeah def his worst movie
Hereditary
Beau is afraid
Midsommar
Eddington
For me
Really liked beau tbh
Hereditary 3.5
Midsommer 3
Beau 2.5
Eddington 2
Asters dad probably right that he should stop writing his own movies lol
lmaooo, chill, I love Grand Budapest, but it wasn't until recently that I watched some of his older films that I notice there's a lack of humanity and soul in the characters from that point forward.
(but I can't speak for his last couple of films I haven't seen yet)
it has been a minute since i've seen it though so maybe that's not exactly when the shift occurred lol
I somewhat got that vibe on first Grand Budapest watch but it's grown on me tremendously. Easy 5/5 now, plenty of soul there.
French Dispatch and Asteroid City were iffy but Phoenician Scheme was great.

I'll probably revisit at some point. I like to rewatch movies after a while just to see if I still feel the same way about them - and as a litmus test to see if I've experienced character development lmao
French Dispatch was okay, but I really enjoyed the Benicio del Toro and Lea Seydoux part. That was really good.

Lea Seydoux bush was definitely the highlight
The data center shade was the only good thing about this and shut your w**** mouth about Grand Budapest
M. Gustave is one of the best characters this century and all the leads have plenty of humanity
that smiley lmao
Just finished . This was f***ing unhinged to the max man. I don’t know if I enjoyed it but I couldn’t stop watching it. I need to bathe in some holy water

Asteroid City is lowkey like his most heartfelt film

oh 💀 i haven't seen it yet. there are soooo many films i've missed out on in the past year or so. i keep thinking "i'll watch it next time i have time" and then by the time i can, it's no longer in theaters.

its a bit of a acquired taste but if it clicks its gas
almost up there with grand budapest at this point for me
very good watch fantastic acting probably my fave this year ( or defo up there) slightly spoiled by the ting i was was huffin n puffin like shethe big bad wolf (and yes she is big n bad but thats besides the point) crazy seeing michael ward in what wouldve been his route to hollywood success he acting well accent on point crazy seeing him :get arrested life imitating art similiar to watching creed 3 jonathon majors acting so well as a deranged/scary boxer then him getting dv charges and conviction with voice evidence of him admitting that he'd hit women: knowing he got a r charge n his career is done i followed him from topboy/blue story n even met him in person (he seemed bless) but i feel like he prob did it ( seen a uk drill reddit post about him being like that from 2 years ago) i defo need to catch up on ari's other work only seen midsommer which i enjoyed he really knows how to take you into a world a feel like your living in it for 2 hours. parts felt like gta with the critique of america gun culture and just american small town mindsets all supporting cast did really well. the BLM parts felt well done and executed clearly I feel like if it had more black characters it wouldnt have worked as well although would have been interesting seeing a black womans perspective ( or unless they got mikeys dad in a flashback or something)
crazy going from watching midterialists to this THIS IS CINEMA
Should I watch this for one of the first dates with someone who hast watched many movies

Made this mistake taking a girl to see poor things in theaters. Wasn't first date but after that movie we never hung out again

Weapons, freakier Friday, naked gun, superman, together are all better date movies that are out rn. This could be fun depending on the person but quite a high and likely margin for error for a first date

was gonna say the naked gun 😮💨

See it with her and if she likes it, marry her. You will never find a realer one in your life.
its like he saw No Country and Serious Man and decided im gonna merge these vibes but make it completely devoid of anything enjoyable, interesting or thought provoking
lowkey ari is kinda ethan coen as a solo director tier
