You think Ari would be landing these big names if he wasn’t consistently writing and directing some of the most interesting films in the industry?
Aster is one of the best doing it right now
Eddington and Beau is Afraid are sprawling five act brain worm movies. His A24 bag were much more concise genre pictures. I hope one day he can marry the two. Perhaps he does that here
Scorsese was in that Jonah hill movie I’m pretty sure a quarter of the alleged budget went in his pocket
We didn’t need that entire 3rd act of town siege. Teased the agitators then they finally show up after being more or less an afterthought for 40 -50 mins and they laid siege on the city lmao then JP goes Rambo and kills almost all of them? It felt like a legit dream sequence it was so random and unnecessary atp I was already ready for the film to end, then it went on for another half hour ish.
The Austin Butler stuff also crammed in. I get what he was going for with a lot of the movie but a restrained focused approach to the like 4 or 5 plot points/themes going on would have worked better imo. You don’t need to throw every single idea you have into the movie.
Make a Covid movie, make a cult movie, make a town under fake siege movie, make a family drama, make a film about big tech taking over small towns with data centers, make a film about racial tensions during covid in a small town, make a movie about a man’s jealousy and need to feel big in that small town. You don’t need to do all of the above at once. It’s messy, overindulgent and personally didn’t work for me.
that's fine if you didn't think any of that worked. to me it didn't feel out of place and it all fit in with the larger theme of the current breakdown of society (and frankly something like that will need a lot of storylines needed to display because one plot point just isn't enough)
i dont agree with anyone who tries to take marks off because something is "indulgent", when most art that is created is inherently indulgent. creating art is such a personal experience and most artists are creating art for themselves first, not for the audience. when i see someone saying that something is bad because it's overly indulgent, all i see is someone saying that they should be pandering to the audience. that might not be the intent of what you're saying, but that's all im seeing when i see someone use that as a form of criticism
at this point I feel like I like the idea of Ari Aster more than Ari Aster himself
Beau Is Afraid was meh, and Eddington had the making of a good film, but was ultimately too unfocused and all over the place (although to its credit, I do think about it and what it was trying to say often)
I feel like he needs a script editor to just really reel him in, if not just sticking to purely directing
He’s never let me down let’s go

I can respect your take as long as you respect mine
my intent wasn’t to dismiss it as bad off those merits I was just speaking on why I felt he’s missed some for me and has left me feeling mixed on his last two movies
Like I said personally I didn’t enjoy Eddington much but I don’t think it’s “bad”. It soured for me as I sat on it and he’s on a bit of a lull streak for me bc of that since I was already mixed on Beau
The poster under you said he needs someone to reel him in a bit and that’s kinda how I feel about Eddington specifically. A solid editor doesn’t hurt your art as long as they know what they’re doing. Some art is meant to be messy, indulgent etc etc. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. This one just didn’t for me is all which is okay, just upsetting since he came out of the gate with a great 1-2 punch
bro peaked with Hereditary
At the end of the day
Your sister is pressing play, your trainer is pressing play
Your wifey, your wifey, your wifey, your wifey (True)
i'll still peep but im not overly excited. in fact couldn't muster up enough excitement to watch Eddington even
This is nothing for the award shows, but they'll still watch it tho. Cuz it's that new Ari A that's just the way it go
at this point I feel like I like the idea of Ari Aster more than Ari Aster himself

I don’t think he “tried” to say something with Eddington. I think he very clearly said it in the most on the nose way possible, no subtlety whatsoever, which made it terrible. He didn’t allow enough time to pass to tackle a satire on 2020.
She's been in a lot of blockbusters, but she's hardly some sort of box office draw
Fam, i have always liked you, despite any disagreements I may have with you in regards to taste. You are a nice user and often try to engage with others and have actual discussions, and I sincerely respect that.
So please trust me when I tell you that the following is coming from a place of love:
This post is truly one the most absurd and patently incorrect statements I have ever seen in this section.
