I ain't gonna lie and say melodic guys like Roddy and Gunna got that s*** from Drake when it clearly came from Thug whose influence lineage is completely separate from Drake.

But we can't also downplay Drake's impact of being an artist that could function as both a top rapper and a top r&b singer. I'm not even sure if that has any real influence tho cause idk who else is successfully doing that s*** today

Nah don’t get me wrong. Drake is influential as hell. There’s a lot of artist he inspired and who will tell you he inspired them.

My only issue is w the people itt acting like he created the wave of singing and rapping single handedly and all the melody rappers today are doing it because of him

There’s so much misunderstanding about Drake’s influence or innovation that it isn’t worth getting into that rabbit hole about. Imo the most impressive thing Drake about Drake’s stamp on the game is that he created an entirely new archetype that only he has done at his level since

And before mfs attack me - f*** off. I’m not saying he invented rapping and singing, I’m not saying he’s the first rapper to be vulnerable. Anyone with half a brain knows he was neither the first to do those things or the first to do them “right”

No no no…Drake’s true innovation is in being a rapping ass rapper with bars who could run the rap game but also be an r&b-pop heartthrob at once. And ask yourself: when the hell was there ever a guy in rap who was in the same convo as a Hov/Em/Wayne/Ye but also the same convo as Trey Songz and them? Imagine going on a hiphop forum in 2006 and making a thread asking if we’d ever see a rapper who was as dominant in rap as Em but also was a JT type as a singer - no one would buy it

Yet Drake exists. That’s an archetype that Drake created himself by taking things from those who came before him (Kanye, Budden, Wayne, Hov, Phonte, Aaliyah etc) and mixing them into something new. And it became an archetype by Drake being the first to do it so consistently at a dominant level (this is for the Lauryn Hill/Andre mentions).

Not to mention it was so f***ing effective cause it was a problem solver (as most truly innovative things are): rappers no longer needed to go to singers for hooks, they could sing hooks themselves and still retain their cool factor…is it a coincidence the rapper/pop singer formula was all but killed off as THE thing after Drake blew up?
