Fela's mom was a founding mother of Nigeria and big women's rights activist and his father was a big educator in the country. Him and his siblings grew up upper middle class but were literally raised to understand the plight of the poor and all took on professions which directly helped the poor and were activists themselves. None really sold out for a rich life and were all abused by the government. Insane what the family accomplished really. His brothers were doing the same s*** but as doctors
So kinda makes sense how much of an activist he became, especially after being inspired by the Black Power Movement in America
plus he and his family lived through the Nigerian civil war on the side of Biafra secession and independence, for at least part of which time he lived in Lagos. I don't know how you can experience that without coming out of it intensely politically aware for life.
